Europe / Re: German Pork Butchers' Database
« on: Wednesday 26 August 15 20:26 BST (UK)  »
SwissGill,

Thanks for the vote of confidence for the work limehouse79 and I are doing as data coordinators, researchers and contributors.  It is appreciated, and sorry for the long dissertation on duplicates below.

The data coordinators have over 2700 records to work through, many with date of birth and abode fields blank (although many have this data in the notes section), and this makes it more difficult to identify duplicates.  Further, we do not have, nor would we accept general record deletion privileges, but we are working with other contributors to try and wean the duplicates through consensus.  It is a slow process that sometimes takes a few PMs to resolve for each and every duplicate.

To better identify duplicates we have been editing records to copying information from the notes sections to the appropriate birth, death, marriage, immigration, naturalisation and parents data fields (I leave the data in the Notes Section and do not delete it), so that gradually the database will become more searchable and sortable.  One other edit I perform is selecting / filling in country and county in the Abode Fields where they are blank, but a city or town has been referenced in the notes.  I am not adding information to the records of other contributors as I am simply copying existing information to the appropriate data field.  This is an agreed process between the data coordinators and Berlin-Bob, the GPB database Guru.

By this process I have begun to identify certain records as duplicates, and I have been approaching other contributors about the deletion of a duplicate, many of which have just “skeleton” information.  This process is random as I work through some of my own research, as I do like to keep my research interests going.

A more difficult duplication occurs with the surname entry, but we are gradually working away on this as well.  There are many anglicised entries input by contributors unaware of the German surname.  Another problem with this is the fact that numerous German surnames have letters with umlauts, and the search/sort listing do not always sort anglicised and German surnames together.  For example, do a quick search on GOLTENBOTH/GÖLTENBOTH.  You will find the umlauted version sorts at the top as GOELTENBOTH is assumed, followed by a GOLDHAMMER, 2 GOLLERS, and then the anglicised GOLTENBOTHS. This is an unavoidable quirk in the database and how umlauts can be sorted, but not all contributors search the full list for other possibilities before adding a record of their own.

Removing duplicates will be a slow process, but work is being done behind the scenes to reduce duplication.  So far it seems to require numerous PMs and much elapsed time between identification and completion, and not everyone responds.  If you are aware of these please feel free to send me, limehouse79 or Berlin-Bob a PM identifying the issue/duplicate.

Finally, we have many, many “orphan” records left by well-meaning contributors whose last log in and/or contribution is measured in years, not months or days.

As a general comment, I attempt to lead by example.  If a record already exists I add Readers Comments and send a PM to the owner advising them of the new information.  If I create a record and find that  someone else has a familial relationship, where I do not,  and they wish to have ownership of the record,  I suggest that they create a new record, copy the information I have and then request I delete my entry … no problem.  Both these methodologies rely heavily on contributors using the PM system to notify other contributors of issue, so here is hoping this will help to spur on more dialogue among the GPB contributors.

Thanks for your comments and confidence.  Cheers … arky101

The Common Room / Re: Monks family

FYI,

If you do an ancestry.com search on the surname, input the parents names, restrict years to 1838 +/- 10 years, and restrict to Middlesex you will see many of the baptisms for the children of John and Elizabeth.  Is it possible his first names were John Francis?  If so there are children before Ann.  In particular John Thomas Monks, born Feb 18, 1829 to John Francis and Elizabeth, at Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, father's profession is Weaver.  Also Elizabeth Frances Monks born Mar 7, 1832, to John Francis and Elizabeth, at Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, father's profession is Weaver.

Hi,

Just a thought ... have you tried going laterally through the family and researched brothers and sisters of John?  There are numerous baptism and marriage records for "MONKS" in the vicinity of Spitalfields, from the early 1800s and many of these register parents names.  Some of these refernce "trader", "weaver" as professions.  There are also London rent and tax records for a couple of  John Monks that may be applicable.

“Twins Catherine & Bernard were born in 1933 (know this from family and also found records on familysearch.org)”

Unfortunately, the familysearch.org research has proven to be less reliable than the UK BMD Index search for this family.  It certainly appears that there were just 4 children born to Thomas Frail and Helen Hughes during the time period given.  These were: Thomas (1932), Peter H (1936), Irene (1938), Vincent (1939).

Catherine, born Q4 1932, died Q1 1934, before her 2nd birthday and is the daughter of Peter Frail and Mary Sheils (who married Q4 1926).

There are 2 options for Bernard, but neither associates him with Frail/Hughes.

Bernard 1, born Q3 1932, died Q1 1935 before his 3rd birthday and is the son of Bernard Frail and Margaret Little (who married Q4 1931).

Bernard 2, born Q3 1931 is the son of Leonard Frail and Doris Brockley (who married Q1 1922).

Peter Frail, Catherine’s father, and Bernard Frail, Bernard 1’s father, appear to be Thomas Frails younger brothers as all can be found in the 1911 UK census at No. 21 Heslops Yd, Birtley, Durham.

Hi,

I did a "re"-search in the BMD Index and found only 4 children associated with Frail/Hughes marriage, Thomas (1932), Peter H (1936), Irene (1938), Vincent (1939).  Bernard seems to be associated with a Frail/Brockley marriage (1931 birth) or a Frail/Little marriage (1932 birth), and Catherine with a Frail/Shiels Marriage (birth 1932).

Am I missing something re Bernard & Catherine?

Hi,

The following links will give you the setting of the Big Bend Highway (the old Trans Canada Highway route), which was replaced by the tunnels and snow sheds of the Rogers Pass (the existing Trans Canada Highway Route).

Hi Bob,

I have a request.  I am now successfully assisting limehouse79 edit and add info for their PB records.  Once I enter the info I like to flip back to the actual display record to proof my work and formatting.

In the Edit display screen with the listing of PBs one can edit, would it be possible to get the record display icon embedded to the left of the PB name to more easily go to this display with a single click?  Right now I go back to Quick Search, select the letter, find the PB, and then click on the icon to display the record.  Once I proof it, if I need to make changes (I usually need to), I then must select Edit, display my PB edit list, and start the process over again ....

Any chance this is a quick fix or addition?

Hi Bob,

Me again regarding the CR/LF issue.  I think the problem has only occurred with the 1 record you gave me edit privileges for ... PB:1726, RATHMANN, Christian.  I checked the PB records I created as "Submitter" and the formatting is still as I entered it for these.

I suggest this may be a one off "Voodoo Magic" occurrence.  I will do a "Request to Edit" to limehouse79 for this record and reformat the text.  We can then watch if it is perhaps an unexpected "feature" of "Researcher" vs "Submitter" edits.

When I was working in IT I had a quote posted on my white board as a reminder to programmers and data analysts ... "Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious"  ;D In other words, who knows what combination of keystrokes and mouse clicks were used to get me from formatted to un-formulated ... perhaps the easiest task is to let me reformat the text, keep an eye on it, and move on.

Hi Bob,

I use Windows 7.0.

Just to clarify, the record and my edits were OK a couple of weeks ago.  The database displayed my information as I had typed it and formatted it.  It was only last week that I noticed the change and the absence of CR/LFs from my formatting.  This "reformatting" seemed to occur around the same time of our discussions about the 1000 character limit on the Comments field, the number of characters used by creating links to other PBs, and the increase of 1000 characters to 1200 characters.  Hope this extra info helps diagnosis.
