Hi Karen,

Thanks for the link. It could well be Uncle Bert, because there are strong family links to Glossop via his twin sister and his younger step brothers and sisters.

The date is a little earlier than I was expecting, but all the information I have on Bert's life and times is via the family grapevine and as such contains "much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate".

The balance of probability at this stage is that your link has found our man!

Many thanks

David.   :)

Canada / Herbert Schofield

Can any one help me trace the history of my Great Uncle Bert??

Herbert Schofield was born in 1886 to John Henry Schofield and Anne Wooley. He had a twin sister Ethel Schofield and an elder Brother James Henry Schofield.

It is believed that Bert served in the Great War of 1914 / 18 and emigrated to Canada some time later.  Family rumour has it that he married someone called Pearl? but don't know whether she was English or Canadian.

I have searched many lists of Canadian immigrants to no avail.
I have also tried the Canadian census but without knowing where in Canada he was it is the proverbial needle in a haystack!!

Can anyone help out with search areas or further information.

Thanks in advance

David.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Dents in the Dales ??
« on: Wednesday 12 October 05 16:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

My continued searches have moved me to the Yorkshire Dales and to the villages of Thoralby, Newbiggin and Bishopdale, all near to Aysgarth, which is the nearest church for Christenings, Marriages etc.

The Dent family lived in these villages from at least 1784 to the mid 1900's.

John Dent b1784 married Elanor?? and had 11 children, three of whom were Johns!(1816, 1820 and 1822) the others being George, Isabell, James, Elizabeth, Ann, Elanor, William and Jane.

George married Ann Lord and had 5 children, one of whom was George Dent 1862 who is my Grt Grandfather.

My questions - at last - are...........Who were John Dent's(1784) Parents and siblings?         And also what happened to the other 10 of his children??

All help and suggestions will be most welcome

Happy hunting

David.

Paul E, Timbottawa,

Thanks for the pointers guys, I had tried looking at parish records through the LDS sit which has been very good when going "backwards", but has not provided much help from circa 1880 to the present. I haven't tried 1837 on-line but will do so in the next few evenings.

The idea of looking on the local council site is a good idea, I will try the Derbyshire CC and Staffordshire CC sites and report back - why two CCs?      Easy.  My paternal family comes from Hartington and Sheen which are neighbouring villages, less than a mile apart but due to the intervention of geography, in different counties! Such is family history research. ;)

I will give a report back on progress with these two avenues of inquiry.

Thanks again guys

David

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately Derek has never met his mother as he was raised in foster care since birth.  The only information about hi mother is her name on the birth cert.  I will check up on this and let you know the exact spelling of her Christian name.  Her marital status is not known, and due to the taboos of that period regarding "unexpected" pregnancies there is also a question mark over her surname.

Is it possible to find information from the Hospital Records somehow?

Did ferry companies keep records of passenger mandates between the mainland and the Channel Islands?

Sorry I cannot supply any further information and only ask more questions.

Watch this space for exact details from Derek's Birth Cert.

Thanks

Hi fellow RootsChatters,

My father in law is Derek Delaroute. He was born in Hackney Mothers Hospital on 10th Nov 1922. His mothers name was given as Marcel Delaroute, Father unknown.

Derek thinks that his mother was born / lived in the Channel Islands. He was raised in foster care and never new his parents.

Can anyone help to trace his ancestors

Thanks

Thanks Pauline,

I didn't know that the Electoral Registers were available.  Can these be viewed on line? If so how and where?

Sorry to keep asking questions, but it's the only way to learn!!

Thanks

David
