I agree that the house styles are typical of the Bournemouth area.   It used to be common to name a house after where you come from, so having a Welsh name as the house name fits.   Sorry I can't make out the other house name either though.

It looks like it starts with a V or W, then 2 more characters, then P or R and finally A.  I hope you come up with the answer.

I agree with the most likely cases.
I would say it looks more like a general store / ironmongers, but the containers outside could also be for milk.
It's hard to remember life before plastic and refrigerators etc...

Great picture to have, maybe one of the geniuses on here can do some restoration work on it for you.

My Mum and Dad used to live in Nuneaton, but everyone in our family up that way has passed on now.   Hope you find out where it is.

Lancashire / Re: PAYNE Families

Hi Cad,

My Paynes from Hinckley in Leicestershire around the same time were in the Hosiery business.   Might be a link.

I need to look up my Paynes in the early 1800's because I have James, John and William, maybe they headed off to South Africa, who knows.   I know my grandmother (a Hurst who married a Payne) visited South Africa in the 1950's, but I think this was just on a cruise, I know nothing of any family down there.   Anyone who might have known is of course long gone now :(

Hi Tisy,
I've come across your Elijah Payne before whilst researching my own Elijah Payne born 1811, son of Simeon, this family were from Knook and Longbridge Deverill in Wiltshire. A lot of them seem to be Weavers.
I've assumed there must be a connection somewhere down the line.
Apparently the use of the more archaic biblical names in this family indicates they were non-conformist, there's even a Zebedee!
Your family story sounds fascinating, good luck with your research.

The Common Room / Re: Death of RootsChatter: 'Christopher'

Very sorry to hear this.  I haven't been active on RC for some time, but I know how close some of the relationships here are.
However to die alone and to not have any family around you is a very sad affair.  For the people who have to sort out your affairs who don't even know if you have family or not, it's also very distressing.

As usual it's good to see so many fellow RC members taking the time to say farwell to an old friend.

Farewell Christopher, Rest In Peace in a happier place.

It's a shame my Dad passed away several years ago, as he might have been able to help.  My Mum adn Dad lived in Four Oaks when they got married, late 1940's, but sadly neither of them are around to ask.

The house I grew up in also had a house name as well as a number.  I think with a name like "The Chalet" it probably was a house that resembled a chalet, maybe a Swiss Chalet

I hope you find the answer you are looking for.

I'm so pleased I happened across this post, as I haven't bene on RC for a couple of months.

This could be my family, the Payne side of my family are form Hinckley, and the Hurst side from Stoke Golding.   However there are so many different branches of Paynes in the Hinckley area and freuently with the same first names, it's hard to tell.

The furthest back I have at this point is James Payne (17??) married to Rachel Lamb (?).

I am descended from their son James Payne (1782-1844) who married Ann Wood (1781-1866) in Hinckley, we think in 1803.

I have attached a copy of a family tree that was drawn up by a family member some years ago in Hinckley.  We did some research last year on the tree, since there is often little information, and managed to confirm most of it using online resources, which of course were not available when it was drawn up, presumably using family bibles and parish records.

Hope this helps.  I do have more details on many people on the tree, but as yet not online in my database.   It would be nice to find a connection wouldn't it.  So far I have not been able to find any relatives from other parts of the tree.

Sorry only just read this...
It is a small world, and I would love to explore the hardy link with my family further, even though it's not a blood link.

Would have been interesting to see.

I'm losely related...

My great-grandfather's brother was married to Thomas Hardy's cousin's widow - they brought up their 2 daughters (of the 1st marriage) in Barby, near Rugby, Warwickshire.  I'm still not sure how he came to meet the good widow though - it would have been a long trek from there to the wilds of Dorset in those days.
