It never ceases to amaze me how you guys can spot in a matter of hours what I've been trawling for for the last two months.  Many thanks for your info - it is exactly what I was looking for.  I will also pay a visit to the Antiquarian Society as per your suggestion.

If any future reader of this post would like a copy of the brief history being currently put together, please use the PM facility to get in touch.

Oh Knowledgable Ones,

I have taken a short detour from family history and into looking at the history of the aforementioned.  Newspaper accounts are numerous and forthcoming from which I have gleaned that the local Vicar, Rev John Williams, started the initiative in Dec 1873, with a building having already been identified.  This opened in March 1874 and enjoyed a positive start before moving to the site where it remains today at 135 Neath Road, Briton Ferry in May 1878.  After this, it is well documented locally in newspapers, local surveys, census returns etc.etc.

The thing is, despite the plethora of news accounts of the various shows and concerts at this first site, I can't seem to find anything about where it actually was in those four years.  I've checked some documents and maps but they don't seem to show it and directories from the time don't have it listed.  The only things I can infer from the accounts that I have read is that it has 12 'convenient and spacious rooms' and that it is not already on Neath Road.  The current Steward has no further info.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where I might be able to seek this info, or have any local knowledge that might help?  Photos or connections from any time are also much appreciated.

I'm currently transcribing the gravestones in Macpelah.  Who are you looking for?

Useful Links / Free e-Book - The Bankrupt Directory 1820 - 1843

Downloadable as a free e-book, a complete register of all bankrupts (including residence, trade and dates) between 1820 and 1843.  Seems very comprehensive.  Alphabetically arranged and searchable.

Thanks for the time that you've taken to look into this guys.  I've found Jessie in 1901 - she was the one who helped me to track down the whole family line there really as she brought the surname assurance; she's living with the branch that I am related to.

Took your advice and looked through the children - think I've found Robert but no parents.  It's a mystery!

Thanks again for your help and advice.

Many thanks for that, it's a good tip.

I've got a bit of their back life:
James was born in Llanelly November 1840, to parents William Morgan (also a tailor) and Elizabeth (nee Bidder).  James also became a tailor and he and his wife Elizabeth (nee Williams, married 1868) moved to Neath between 1871 and 1874.  The 1891 census records them in Llantrisant but I cannot find hide nor hair of them in 1901.  Then in 1911 they turn up in this lodging house.  I have no info on them after this date, just a list of possible deaths which are quite long!

I really appreciate your help, thank you.

Unfortunately the online newspapers only go up to 1919.  I checked Find My Past just in case they were part of an online parish record but other than the usual death record I couldn't find them (although there is a trade union and a school record for Archibald).  Best bet might be to check parish records at Glamorgan archives, which are searchable.

No worries.

I am frequently at the West Glam archives and am happy to do a search through the parish lists for you if you supply some possible church/chapels.

That's really helpful, thank you.  Out of curiosity (always need to learn more!) how did you find out that it was a registered lodging house, and the owner?

I'd really like to know why the couple that I'm interested in (the tailor and his wife) suddenly turned up in a lodging house in Rhondda.  Was that a normal thing?  I can't find them in 1901 and am trying to piece together their later lives.

Thanks all, you're marvellous :)
