I was wondering however, if (like in World War 2) anyone employed in an industry that was supportive of the country and the army etc. (like farming or shipbuilding) they were not 'conscripted' ..... I am now on the track of looking for a sailmaker with surname Edgar in the St. Bees area around that time - hopefully that might help

Hi, thanks for that - yes it does sort of help ..... given the area ..... whitehaven etc. there were a lot of sailors (mariners) around - I am thinking on the lines of him changing his name in about 1640 (revol  ution) and that perhaps he was born in Ireland or Scotland so I am now going to do a bit more lateral thinking and see if there was an Edger born around 1622 and became a mariner or, as you say, his father was a mariner.  I still think Taffetie wasn't his given name but hey I'm open to any suggestions so please keep 'em coming.
many thanks to all

Well I never ......... thank you so much for that very very interesting reply to my question.  You could have a point there ..... I didn't think of the war and yours sounds a very interesting theory.  I have been thinking "who in their right mind would call a child Taffetie?" and was beginning (or actually quite a way down the road in thinking this could be a nickname but then I thought that on official documents he would probably use his real name - but when he kept appearing as Taffetie I thought it rather strange.  Do you know if there is any way I could find out more please.

Hi,  I am in desperate need of help with my family history - I have been at it since 2008 and have now got back to an ancestor called Taffetie Edger who married a Jena Brag in St. Bees 13/6/1642.  I think Jena is actually Jeneta Brage - I can cope with that but I cannot find any birth or any other information for Taffetie Edger other than the marriage and him being the father of a number of children after the marriage.  I appreciate that St. Bees is a wide area and includes Whitehaven but I just can't find any information about Taffetie anywhere.  Can anyone help me please?

Hi Jackie,

I am going away for a few days and although I take the computer with me I don't really get a chance to use it very much so I probably won't get back to you for about a week.

In the meantime have you tried the Records Office (I think its in Workington) - don't worry if you haven't I think I still have a contact email address for them I can look that out for you.

Is your mum still with us or you the last one standing as it were?  I can understand where you are coming from when you say you just want to find something so I will do what I can to help.  Whereabouts in the country are you by the way?

Kind regards
Tricia

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Edgar family

Hi, thanks for that info. I know the area very well and still have relatives in Tow Law - I have already communicated with Adamand re gravestones and he couldn't come up with anything. In desperation I got in touch with the Records Office and they don't have a record of a death in their area at that time for an Isabelle or Isabella Edgar but they did say that some records have got lost.  So I think its going to be a case of going to the graveyard and having a look and hope that she actually had a headstone.  My other slight problem is that according to my aunt Isabella was buried at Stanley (according to my grandfather) BUT I dont think they had actually finished building the church when Isabella was buried AND I can't understand why she would be buried in Stanley when she lived (and died) in Tow Law and there was a church there.

So keep digging I think.  I am still waiting to hear back from the lady who is trying to find one of the old ancestors in Workington area.  These are some of the ancestors of the ones in Tow Law

Hi Jackie,

Sorry its taken me so long to get back.  So, you are looking for a member of the Edgar family - what information have you got so far regarding full name, date of birth, place of birth etc. etc. Do you have a date or place of birth of your mother and what was the family name, you mention a surname but was that mum's birth name or did your gran later marry to that name.  As you may have noticed, there are many Edgars in that area and its getting the right one - cos there are lots of Josephs and Georges - that will be the problem, so any info you have will help.

Get back soon

Kind regards

Northumberland / Re: charlton surname

Thank you both for that information - Diddy, is the surname Lee and the middle name Kell for the Mary who married William?

It looks as if there has been a major misreading or mishearing on the part of the submitter to the LDS (which I have been suspecting).  Now it seems I will have to find out which of the couples, i.e. William and Mary or Thomas and Mary had a son called Thomas born around the right time as my Thomas.  Thank you again.  Any further help would be greatly appreciated if you have any other leads.  I did suggest to my friend that she got in touch with the LDS submitter (who apparently is a very distant relation) and ask her where she got her information from but that might be up to me as well.  Thanks again

Thank you all so much for your help and pointers.  I have started again from Gladstone Charlton who was my friend's grandfather.  I have gone back to Thomas who apparently was born 1810 or 1811 and died in 1866.  I have got the list of his children and everything seems fine up to now.  It may be (as pointed out ) that Thomas was married twice, but I'll be honest, I'm not looking at that bit at the moment.  I have reached the proverbial brick wall as far as Thomas's father is concerned.  I am told that his father was William but that came from the submitted LDS info.  as did the surname of Skatt for his wife.  I also agree with you guys that Skatt is not an english name and given that the info says that Mary 'Skatt' was born in Northumberland I am tending to think the same as you, that her name was actually Scott.  Do any of you good people that have Charlton's in their tree, have a William that had a son Thomas (born 1810 or 1811) and who was married in 1809 at Seaton Burn to someone called Mary?  I would be very pleased to have just that one little bit of information then I could get over this wall and carry on.  Many thanks for all your help.  I will wait with baited breath from any replies.
Regards
Tricia
