Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry matches don't reply to me....
« on: Sunday 02 July 23 12:28 BST (UK)  »
To be honest, I was very sceptical about using DNA to trace family connections, but one day I saw an offer and thought I'd give it a try anyway. I only really hoped to find out if I had any blood lines outside UK & Europe.

Like many of you I've been sent links, but the trees themselves seemed poorly managed or the person didn't reply.

However, I have had 2 results that have delighted and surprised me. The first one was from someone who told me which line I was related to him by, which gave me the clue I needed to find my Great Grandfather's family. He had been a brick wall for years, but it turns out he'd changed his surname, however all the other information about him matched exactly what I already had.

Also, a second cousin in the US contacted me. We had met as teenagers, but as it was our mothers who kept in touch, when they died we lost contact. We have since kept in touch, and have so much in common we plan to meet up one day.

So I guess the message is don't give up on it. Someone might contact you in time who is worth following up.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / John Ferriers Ocupation
« on: Sunday 26 January 20 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Please see attached.

I'd be grateful if someone could let me know what the letters following John Ferrier's name mean? Given what is written in the place in the marriage record, for the other males listed, I am assuming it his occupation.

Thank you very much. ;D

Alternatively, it could be a poorly formed 'J', making the name Janto?

Janto is also an Italian name.

Does anybody have the lineage of Colonel James Wallace? I've seen that he had one son named William, but I can't find any other information about that son or his descendants.

Do you have any other information? approx date of birth/death/etc

Some years after my father died, I began to wonder who his parents were. They both died when he was a child. He had said very little about them, and there was no one else to ask. Also, I had been named after my dad (an unusual name), and he after his dad, and wondered how far back it went.

This was 5 years ago. I've found out so much about them, and about several more generations going back, that I wouldn't know where to start if I tried to tell anyone their story.  The truth about my family's past has been so very much more interesting than my assumptions were.

Ayrshire / Re: Help with finding the right John Paton of Stewarton
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 17:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas about how to find the right parents of Hugh Paton born in Stewarton 1806

His birth and death records show them as being John Paton (Wright) and Margaret Dickie John and Margaret were married in Stewarton in 1805.

You have confirmed that these are his parents from the documents you have. Do you mean that you want to find out more info about his parents in general?

Monica

Yes, I know John Paton & Margaret Dickie are the Parents of Hugh Paton, I just want to make sure I  find the right John Paton and the right Margaret Dickie from before they were married.

Thanks everyone for the links, I'm just about to check them out.

Ayrshire / Help with finding the right John Paton of Stewarton

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas about how to find the right parents of Hugh Paton born in Stewarton 1806

His birth and death records show them as being John Paton (Wright) and Margaret Dickie John and Margaret were married in Stewarton in 1805.

There are records of a John Paton of about the right age born in Stewarton to  John Paton and Janet Jope/Japp/Jope BUT I have dug around and this John Paton was a shoemaker.

A will document (that I can't read) has a John Paton (wright) having died in 1829 - so no hope of him making it to the census.

A wider search shows up an incredible number of John Paton's born around Stewarton, and Ayrshire in general, and none seem to be born into a family from a similar profession. :o

I have found an apprentice record for a John Paton to a Wright at Haugh, but it does not show who is parents are or where he came from. It may even be the wrong type of 'wright'. ???

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

As has been said before, there are a a significant number of Italian names in the region.

IMHO, I would have thought that if it were Greek, they would likely be Greek Orthodox rather than RC. Therefore I think the father's first name might be Marino - the Italian masculine of Marina.

This leads me to think that the mother's name might be a misspelling, and while I might be completely wrong - the end of the name might say 'tory' or 'tony' rather than 'tong', as the ink may have run a bit.

Therefore the end of the name possibly should read as '....toni'? Which is definitely Italian sounding.

Hope this helps  :)
