Pembrokeshire / Re: John James, Mariner, Blenheim/Great Eastern Shipping Accident
« on: Saturday 29 June 19 09:39 BST (UK)  »
I know that this is an old post, but during my research into a sailor on HMS Blenhein I came across this by the Pembroke Historical Society
During the latter months of 1861 repairs were carried out at Milford. These included the replacement of fittings and furniture demolished in the gale, while saloons and berths were rearranged and put in order.57 The principal repairs were new paddlewheels, rudder head and sailing gear. One of the principal contracts was awarded to James Gaddarn of Neyland that ‘spirited s hipbuilder’ 58 to build a large coffer-dam in order to facilitate repairs to the sternpost and rudder. This work required all the men in his employ.

On Sunday 16 February 1862 an attempt was made to berth the Great Eastern on the gridiron. The attempt ended in disaster. Assisted by three steam tugs, she rounded the Wear Point but during the operation the snapping of a hawser drew into the screw of the Great Eastern a boat containing men belonging to HMS Blenheim. Thirteen men threw themselves into the water, the remaining were ‘rapidly sucked into the maelstrom of waters formed by the screw revolution.’ 59 Two men were drowned, Thomas James of Milford and a boy named Kinston, a native of Ireland. To compound the horror, the Great Eastern struck HMS Blenheim carrying away her bow sprit, jib-boom and foreyard. The damage was estimated at £350.60 The 60-gun screw ship of 1,822 tons, guardship in the Haven and commanded by Lord Frederick Kerr had sustained considerable damage.

Hi Megan,

First see the Victorian County Histories http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=22057

For more details you need to see the plaque, but you will find this quite difficul whre you are. I have a photo somewhere that has escaped my filing system but I wrote the text down and with the help of friends translated most of it. It goes:

Hi Megan,

The Beridges go back a very long way near Kibworth. Look at St Wilfred's Church website http://www.stwilfs.freeserve.co.uk/past.htm#dig

There is a plaque in the church low down just to left of the altar which is to Will am Berridge 1565. They are are very well connected family and you trace them back to Kings and Queens.

Of course there are many other Berridges on the IGI that may not be connected to this branch.

Also search the National Archives for Berridges in Leicestershire. Lots of documents.

Technical Help / Re: HD or HD Ready
« on: Tuesday 15 May 12 14:20 BST (UK)  »
mshrmh is correct HD ready needs an external source particularly a HD set top box to receive and display a HD picture. A HD set already has a built in HD tuner so you save on a bit of kit and the wiring. Just pplug in the aerial and go.

The current good televisions have a built in computer that "upscales" ordinary signals to false HD on the set. Some of these are very good and unless you are sitting very close to the set or have very good eyesight it can be hard to tell the difference. My cable installer guy certainly couldn't when he installed my new HD cable package.

As the cost differences are small by the time you add in a HD set top box and HDMI lead go for the full HD

Better to look for the name.

There must be dozens if not hundreds of laundries in Surbiton & Kingston.
