The Common Room / Re: Ireland Civil Registration Marriages 1845 - 1958

Thanks everyone for your replies.

You are right, I have been really lucky to be able to see for free many records on Irishgen without having to pay for them! I must not be too greedy!!
I have also ordered some direct from the records office in Roscommon but a few years back as it was 4 euros then!
I might go ahead and order ones of interest.

Many thanks everyone for your replies.

Thanks  for your reply.

Wonder why the Irish law is like that but we can see records up to 2005 in England!

As if researching Irish ancestry wasn't hard enough!!

Hi,

Does anyone know why the Irish civil records that are available online only go up to 1958 ?

The England records seem to go up to 2005.

Does anyone also know if there are any plans to make more recent civil Irish records available.
I have used Irishgen  website which is great for deaths up to 1970 but only has births up to 1920 and marriages to 1945. I am looking for a few births post 1920 and marriages post 1945 to see if I can find how I am linked to my DNA matches.
I have searched in vain for an answer on Google!

Any help is much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Gina

Ireland / Help with understanding catholic Irish Marriage Church Record please!!
« on: Tuesday 31 March 20 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My ancestors Patrick Barnes (mistranscribed as Burnes) and Eliza Brennan got married on 23/11/1865 at St James in Dublin. Information got from Ireland Catholic Parish Registers 1655 to 1915

He was from Kilmainham and she was from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow. But underneath the entry it says 'married by leave by... (and then I think the priests name) and next to that it says PP Baltinglass.

Does anyone have any idea what this may mean please. I believe that they may have had a daughter Jane born around 1860, so out of wedlock.

Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Ireland / Re: GROI certificates slow delivery?

Just lately it has been 2 to 3 weeks for them to email the PDF copies I have requested as they say they have a backlog. However, when I email them to ask about the situation they are always very quick to reply to say they have a backlog. Always a good service, albeit a little slow sometimes. Probably will be even longer now as everyone staying at home and probably updating their ancestry files!!

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Software Advice please!!!
« on: Thursday 07 April 16 10:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am a real technophobe and just wanted a bit of advice please if anyone can help?!

I have had an online tree with Ancestry for some years and I think it is virtually complete so I really wonder if it is worthwhile even maintaining my subscription with them as they are so expensive and I really am not that keen on the New format as there seem to bemany errors. I also subscribe to FindMyPast. Both seem to have pros and cons.

However, I also have made paper copies of trees and photos and newspaper articles and various notes about direct line ancestors as I don't want everything online just in case the Ancestry website ever shuts down or something and then I will have no online tree.

So someone suggested I buy a software program to put all my details on so that I will have my tree in more than one place. This is where I get confused as there is so much info out there that I am none the wiser from reading it!

What I basically want is to be able to transfer all the info from my Ancestry tree (I do no have Family Tree Maker) onto a software program but is there a simple way to do this without manually typing in everyone onto the software program?
.
I really just want a stand alone software program that does not need to be linked to an online tree necessarily and can stand alone. Or do you think a program that can interact with all online sites would be best. I know someone who has an old software program called Family Tree Heritage which cannot be bought anymore and the software no longer interacts with the New Ancestry , but they have almost finished their tree so will no longer need to subscribe to Ancestry anyway so I suppose the syncing option does not matter in that case.

I was considering opting for Roots Magic but have read that they will later on this year be able to directly transfer info from an online tree but currently it will only transfer info from FTM which I do not have. Can I use a GEDCOM (whatever this is!) to transfer my online tree to a software program?

Also being a technophobe I do not want a really complicated software program with unnecessary extras that will only confuse me.
Basically I just want another place to store my tree to reduce the risk of losing everything and also my teenage daughters if ever they show any interest in the family tree will probably want something a bit more techy than my paper trees, they will probably want to see the tree on a software program.
Also I do not want to keep paying ancestry a subscription just to keep my online tree available to view (However I think I did read somewhere there that your tree will remain on Ancestry even when you do no subscribe anymore. Is this the case and it it that you will just not be able to search/view census records etc?)

Hoping someone can help!!

Thanks a lot

Gina
