Armed Forces / Colour of Royal Marine uniform
« on: Thursday 29 September 16 12:08 BST (UK)  »
I am going to have this photograph of my grandfather, William Canacott, restored and hand coloured. Before I do this, I want to be sure of the actual colours of his uniform.  He was in the Royal Marine Light Infantry.  The photo was taken in 1901, when he was a Sergeant on board HMS Crescent in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  I believe the uniform to be navy blue, and the sash probably crimson, but I'd like confirmation of this.  Is the piping white or gold? Is the collar navy blue or a different colour.  Are the sergeant's stripes gold, and is there a background colour for these?

I have been unable to establish this to my satisfaction, from images on the internet, and hope that someone with knowledge of naval uniforms can help me with this.

Hello Wayne - I was very interested in your post about the Folkards.  I am also researching this, and would like to share information with you, if you are willing.  My maternal grandfather was William George Canacott (1865-1932), a younger brother of John Canacott (1856-1913) whose daughter Wealthy Daisy Canacott (your grandmother, I believe) was my 1st cousin 1x removed, and possibly the first Canacott to set foot in Australia. Your mother Joyce was therefore my 2nd cousin, which makes us 2nd cousins 1x removed.

To answer the question you asked, your mother had four brothers and one sister, but as your post was over a year ago, you probably know that by now!

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Wealthy Daisy Canacott 1901 Census find

I have found this thread to be of great interest, as I am also a member of this family with such a rare name!  The information has been invaluable in building up this stem of the Canacott branch of my tree on Ancestry.  My maternal grandfather was William George Canacott (1865-1932), a younger brother of John Canacott (1856-1913). Wealthy Daisy Canacott was therefore my 1st cousin 1x removed, and possibly the first Canacott to set foot in Australia!

However, there appears to be one curious anomaly.  Info from findagrave.com gives Wealthy Daisy Folkard's death as 25th July 1955, with burial in Forbes Cemetery, NSW.  I believe this to be wrong, as both Wealthy Daisy & William Hope Folkard are shown on the 1968 Electoral Roll as living at 12 William Street, Forbes, Calare, NSW.  The electoral roll has to be correct, which means that I now have no death dates for either Daisy or William.

As Rob and Lynn S could possibly be distant relatives of mine, I would be very interested in making contact with them to develop this further.
