England / Re: chairwoman
« on: Thursday 19 April 18 12:05 BST (UK)  »
An occupation of “chair woman” may be found in several census pages of England and Wales, and it usually confuses people into looking for strange occupations involving a chair. It is actually a version of “charwoman”, previously “chare woman” (related to “chore woman”) which was pronounced as “chair [Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/chare : accessed 9 Jun 2017), s.v. “Chare”.]

It's not a transcription error. It's a version of “charwoman”, previously “chare woman” (related to “chore woman”) which was pronounced as “chair woman”. [1]

Nottinghamshire / Re: Nottingham Street?????

I agree about http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/ -- it contains a photographic collection for the East Midlands, with a huge number of those being from Nottingham through the ages. Excellent resource!

Also, I'd like to add http://info.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/insightmapping/?l=0.21&xmin=453111&xmax=456921&ymin=339403&ymax=341461 -- this is the Council's own GIS system. It provides access to the current Nottingham maps together with a range of historical maps. It's also possible to overlay them to see what lies at a given location now (see the second drop-down on the toolbar in the top-left of the map). Another excellent resource!

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Re: Jersey and Alderney Look Up for Webber's

Just in case anyone else finds thread and is looking for Simeon Webber, there is a write-up of some research on him at: http://parallax-viewpoint.blogspot.com/2015/05/who-was-simeon-webber.html.

There are at least two different Simeon Webbers whose lives often get mixed up because the evidence is not obvious for either of them.

I hope this helps others who may have reached a brick-wall with him  ;-)

Ah, just found "Edna Webb" [sic] on http://jerripediabmd.net/BMD_UserStuff/Baptisms.aspx. Her baptism was on 3 Nov 1844 in St Helier. The parents are the right ones, although the spelling is a bit of a mess.

Thanks Tracey. I don't use RootsChat much but I can't see any way of contacting you directly -- I can't even send you a RootsChat message.

I'm related to the Chard (& Combe St Nicholas) Webbers. I don't know where the Stone Mason who occasionally lived on Jersey and Alderney fits in yet. Did you ever find a death registration for him? That would rule out any theory of desertion and starting a second family.

I can see that Tryphena married a Walter Mansfield, and located her death as Tryphena Mansfield -- having such an unusual name is a great help, if the spelling is consistent  ;-)

I also came across a Simeon who was a rector and a vicar in the newspaper archives, and I need to show whether he's yet another individual or not.

This thread is very old but I'm replying just in case since I'm working on this family.

I have noticed that Simeon Webber Adams married Tryphena Edmonds in Chard. I have no idea where the "Adams" came from, or went to later. It may have been a recording error but I am waiting for some certificate copies to dig deeper. There may have been more than one Simeon Webber family, too, as the one in the 1861 census is probably not the same one.
