I don’t think you would ever be able to know for sure unless you had a DNA connection to the family of Mr Irwin.

Thanks, all. John and Elizabeth’s son-in-law, John Orme/Arm/Harm, took a Betty Hall as his second wife. Betty was born 1740 in Middleton to Thomas Hall and Elizabeth Turns so I’m open to the idea that Elizabeth Hall, wife of John Goreby, was from the same family.

Is anyone able to see the image for the marriage of John Goreby and Elizabeth Hall, 6 February 1722 at Lichfield Cathedral please? I would like to make sure Elizabeth’s name is Hall and not Hill as I have found a 1705 baptism for an Elizabeth Hill at Lichfield and I’m not sure whether to rule it out.
Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation of John Smith?

This is taken from the parish registers of Doncaster St George. Can anyone make out the words following "Smith" please? I believe the first letter is a "C" (see the "c" in Wheatley common on the bottom entry)

England / Illegitimate child of Thomas Watson and Hannah Armitage
« on: Wednesday 25 November 20 20:08 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor Thomas Watson was an innkeeper in Doncaster, Yorkshire. In 1769, he had married Ann Sutcliffe and they had several children before Thomas’ death in 1792.

I’ve just found a filiation order for Thomas Watson of the Black Swan Inn in Doncaster. It seems he had fathered a child with Hannah Armitage in or before 1785. The document comes from Godmanchester...

How can I find out who this child was? And maybe find out more about Hannah if possible? I’m assuming she was employed by Thomas at some point and originated from Godmanchester.

The will arrived this morning and I’m very very pleased. Thomas’ will named all of his young children and Elizabeth is included! Thomas Watson was an innkeeper and he was married to Ann so I can rule out the other marriages now.

This morning I placed an order for the 1792 will of Thomas Watson the innkeeper. I’m hoping this may name his children, Elizabeth included.
