Somerset / Re: Baker, Alfred & Eliza + Charles Dunn
« on: Monday 15 October 18 00:02 BST (UK)  »
I neglected to respond to trish1120 about Alfred's age.  According to Census returns and the Army, Alfred was born in 1831 but not Baptised until 1835 when his mother had another child baptised.  It may be of interest that another child was not baptised until she was an adult about to marry.  At that time Amanda attempted to alter the baptismal record to show John Baker (her father) as the father of that daughter, but the vicar made a note to that effect in the margin which does not appear in transcripts of the baptismal record.  I have found no evidence of any father of her children as she had no offspring by Longman.  I do not know how many children she had,  but it seems her many daughters were as independent as she was.   Her brother, Henry, was also a blacksmith, who moved to London.  Aloha!  Rico

I am unable to purchase certificates at present because I live in Hawai'i and the GRO will only accept payment by checks drawn on a London bank;  Hawaiian banks do not offer that service, and the USA Post Office will not issue International Money Orders to Britain, so I must wait for Brexit.  Alfred James Baker was the first born of Alfred Baker & Eliza Vowles.  He drowned, which was somewhat suspicious because Charles Dunn's son by a previous wife also drowned.  The Langport news described Eliza as a Widow, but I have never found proof of Alfred Sr.'s death in the UK.  He was a Farrier Sergeant, Service Number 1751/260, so he may have died overseas, but the 7th Royal Irish Lancers said they don't keep records of enlisted personnel.  I am unable to view a scan of the alleged Thomas Baker Elizabeth Vowles marriage 4Q 1868 Bedminster 5C 1187, but it seems to be in error as Elizabeth Vowles married William Hunt 06.XII.1868.  An Eliza Vowles married Thomas Broadbent earlier in the year at Bedminster.  I have investigated a number of Eliza Vowles and Eliza Bakers with no more information that that posted on wikitree.com.  Alfred's grandson, W.A.Baker had no knowledge of his grandparents except they were from "over there" (nodding toward England).  His wife had no letters nor other documentation other than a bundle of photos with no names attached to them, so I really do appreciate all the time you have contributed in researching them.  Aloha!  Rico

Yes, John Baker, blacksmith, was Alfred Baker's grandfather and, after many children by unknown fathers, his mother eventually married Longman.  I will check out the Thomas Baker marriage as it is registered at the right place and the right time, but I have found no prior record of him using the name Thomas.  Thank you very much for your help and prompt responses!  Aloha!  Rico

Still seeking ANY information of Farrier Sergeant Alfred Baker, born 1831 West Coker, Service No. 1751/260 and/or his marriage to Eliza Vowles born Shipton-on-Sea, Somerset.  ANY help greatly appreciated.  Aloha!  Rico

Glamorganshire / Re: Griffiths, Edward d. 1907 Pwllgwaun
« on: Saturday 13 October 18 03:01 BST (UK)  »
It suddenly occurred to me this afternoon to research an Edward born 3Q 1864 Pont-y-pridd and there are only 4, one of which is Edward Davies Volume 11A Page 295.  I never thought of a Davies being Edward's mother, but that certainly fits with Margaret Williams Griffiths and children moving on to Lan Draw Farm and Ann Davies Williams moving off when her husband died.  But I still don't know how Francis Davies came into Lan Draw Farm after marrying Edward's daughter, nor who had possession between Watkins death in 1891 and Francis' marriage.  I would love to hear from anyone with the history of Lan Draw Farm and/or from anyone who knows why Margaret raised Lemuel Price Griffiths and Edward Griffiths.  I can't read Welsh, so I have never found an obituary nor grave for Margaret despite her prominence.  All help greatly appreciated!  Aloha!  Rico

Anglesey Lookup Requests / Re: Hugh Williams Born c1789 Llanddyfnan
« on: Wednesday 30 August 17 02:18 BST (UK)  »
I just read your post and wonder if you found additional information?

According to the 1871 Census, Hugh and Rosanna were living at Uchlawrcoed, Rhymney, with Hugh listed as age 77 and Rosanna as age 80.  In this Census, Rosanna lists her place of birth as Llangwyfan, Denbigshire, but I have not been successful in finding any birth nor marriage information.  Their children, William, Catherine, John, and Edward are listed in the 1851 UK Census as having been born in Llangattock, Breconshire, although they list their place of birth as, "Brynmawr".  In the 1901 Census for Ystradyfodwg, Glamorganshire, son Edward, aged 60, is living with sister Catherine Johns, age 69, and Edward's son Hugh Coleman Williams, age 6.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Rowberrow Parish Registers
« on: Monday 25 January 16 00:47 GMT (UK)  »
Although John Vowles lists his place of birth as Rowberrow on Census reports, Merchant Navy records list his place of birth as Pill, Somerset, and date of birth 27.VIII.1801, but I have been unable to trace any other support of his birth or parentage.  I am tracking his 1846 daughter, Eliza, daughter of Sarah A. Stevens (Stephens), who claims to have been born in Shipham, but records show Rowberrow.  Any photos or other information would be appreciated.  Eliza apparently never married, but had children by Alfred Baker, Huish Episcopi Blacksmith, and Charles Dunn, Langport White Lion publican and Wearne Tailor.

Thomas Yelding was the father of Henry Yelding who married Abigail Fossett (Great Yarmouth, Norfolk) 24.XI.1861 St. Mary, Whitechapel, MDDX,  and Harry Yelding who married Kate Hanneford 4Q 1895 Warrington, Lancs, both providing a great number of circus entertainers to the continent and the Americas.
Note that Thomas is listed as "shopkeeper" on one marriage certificate, but "artist" on the other . ...Aloha!
