Warwickshire / Re: Hatton County Lunatic Asylum, Warwick
« on: Tuesday 28 November 23 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
The record for theophilus I am sad to say bears the same status as all the others  which is the awful 'Lunatic'.
I believe that because he was home with his parents until his mother died he may have been 'Downs syndrome' and was unable to care for himself.
Many Downs children were placed in these institutions, i worked in one in the 80s and many had been there for  30 years.

Hatton is now a housing estate.

That seems strange if he was the posters 3x great grandfather, I see nothing wrong with a person with downs syndrome having a family - but it'd have been usnusal wouldn't it?

Do any of the records specify that Catherine was buried?
It wasn't uncommon for the body to be used after hanging for medical research.

London and Middlesex / Maggie Stratford born Peckham

I can find Maggie Stratford on the census, 1901 she is in Andover.
The previous census Croydon, 1881 in Peckham Rye

I’m looking to try and locate the address, it looks like Downs road, but unsure?

Would anyone know where this road would have been located at Peckham Rye?

Warwickshire / Re: Warwickshire County Asylum records

Given that the last of these people died 116 years ago, does anyone with more experience than me think it is possible that the 100 year rule applies and I might be able to see their records?

Although your ancestor died 116 years ago, their records will have been recorded in very large bound volumes - which may well span 30-40 years therefore the records may have to stay closed.

You could email the archive and give the name and date and enquire if you were to visit if you would be able to view the volume. Alternatively you could enquire how much it would cost to have the pages photographed and sent to you.

The site of the asylum is now a housing estate but the mane house is still standing.

Good luck with your search.

Thank you Trish

I do remember that Jane Sing was a rug weaver & the family were weavers.

Thank you for the added information concerning Grace Veal

Hello

Just had an email today advising that someone had added to this thread.

So was Jane Sing (nee Lake) born 1777
peter Sing mother?

Sorry it’s a long time since I’ve looked at this research

I do remember her being on the census in 1841 with Charlotte Bowden though

Warwickshire / Re: Warwick records office

Hi

Warwick record office does have a camera stand- but not much use with a camera phone tbh.

They do charge a daily rate for a camera permit at around £8 for the day

Many of the maps in the archive have been professionally digitised on cameras which have 3 minute shutter speeds & then the sections digitally stitched together - thus the fantastic clarity that Mark mentions

The office do offer a digital service, though this can be slow, it would produce decent quality photographs for turning into prints.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Re: Stuck on Neale of Lambeth
« on: Saturday 23 June 18 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My relative has found a marriage for an Isaac Henry Neale & Ann York in All Saints, Northampton. The father has the same name and occupation as Isaac that married Elenor Tyler

I am still not able to find Isaac on the 1951 census

The marriage took place in April after the census was taken so Isaac should be alone.

Curiously the brides father is a James Chambers, not York and Ann is a spinster

Can anyone assist finding this couple on the census?
