Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Hayling Island - Emily Elizabeth Rustell
« on: Sunday 03 October 21 05:35 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to everyone for your input. Still can't find Emily's birth but it looks like Emily might be Amelia who swapped with Emma. With reply to Forguette, I can't get the birth certificates as I can't find the index numbers I need to get them. If you're right and the sisters swapped, then Amelia took years off her age as the marriage certificate states 19 years and this keeps pace through all the census records.

Also mckha489, thanks for the link to the burials. I already have the death certificate of Emily Elizabeth but it doesn't say anything about her birth date. I thought if I could get someone to look at the gravestone it might give the birth details. I have contact the Hampshire Genealogy Society in the hope someone there will be able to help. With regards to the Emsworth birth George was working in Emsworth when he married Emily. Marriage certificate states both bride and groom's fathers were labourers. Hopefully the replies from all you nice people will help with my research. Thank you so much.

Thanks, I have looked in the Hampshire Burials and can't find any reference to Emily or her husband George. With reference to the 1891 census. Although it says Amelia, George's wife is called Emily Elizabeth in every other census, plus on her marriage and death certificate. Their daughter Amelia who would be 13 years old in 1891, does not appear in their family on the 1891 census. She definitely survived as when her mother died and her father George remarried, the younger children were divided between the father and his new wife, and the older sisters. Amelia ended up with two young sisters in the 1901 census. By this time she was married.

Thanks to everyone. To answer questions, marriage certificate shows Emily Elizabeth Rustell, father George Rustell - labourer, married George Bettesworth. Witnesses James North and Sarah Ann Bettesworth - stepbrother and sister of the groom.
Eldest daughter born in Emsworth - probably registered there because the family lived on Hayling Island which is quite near Emsworth and this (Hayling) is where the daughter was christened.
'Emily' marries Geo. Buttesworth - this should be George Bettesworth (my grandfather) they married on 21 October 1876 (have marriage certificate with Emily Elizabeth as bride's name. With regards to Amelia in 1891 this could be Emily's second daughter.
I think the assumption that Amelia and Emma swapped names could be correct but it needs more research. What I'd really like is to find her grave, or details of her burial but the information doesn't seem to be on FindAGrave or Billion Graves. Thanks for all your help. Onwards and upwards. I'll get there eventually as there's two or three of us researching this.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Hayling Island - Emily Elizabeth Rustell

Emily was possibly known as Emma before the married. She was the first wife of my grandfather George Bettesworth b1854 and they married in October 1876 on Hayling Island, Hampshire. Emily gave birth to 15 children (3 boys and 12 girls) although two of them died as infants. Emily and her youngest child Jesse, both died at the beginning of March 1898. I have copies of her marriage certificate and her death certificate but neither show her birth date. Working back from the ages quoted on these certificates we believe she was born in 1858 or 1859 but not sure where, possibly Portsea or Portsmouth. She spent some of her life pre-marriage on Hayling Island and she and George lived on Hayling the whole of their married life. Really stumped by where she was born and when. Although my father was number eight of the nine children of the second marriage, I have managed to contact some of the descendants of the first family and they would also be interested in more info on Emily.

Herts Completed Lookup Requests / Re: David AYLING - Baptism Record

Not sure if this query is still ongoing or if my input will help. In my tree there is an Annie MM Ayling b.1894 (not entirely sure where but could be Chichester) who married Albert Bettesworth (b.1890) in the first quarter of 1915 in Chichester. Albert was my father's half-brother (very big family from Hayling Island) If you'd like to join the Bettesworth Family Information on Facebook you'll find photos and relations of this couple.

From my research there are three lines of Bettesworth families. One is my own which started in Westbourne, Sussex (now Hampshire) and expanded (more like exploded) in Hayling Island outside of Portsmouth. The second is from the Catherington and London area but we believe there is a connection between the two families, just haven't gone back far enough yet.
In Torquay in Devon there is a Bettesworth family who own a real estate agents and one of the ladies who married into it is an artist who advertises on Facebook. I can't find any connection to the first two, but the Devon family might be the one where you'll find more about your ancestor. John is a very common name in my Bettesworth family there are loads of them! Good luck!

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: 1901 & 1911 Census - George Price and family
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 04:09 GMT (UK)  »
I think George Henry Price born 1886 is the one who married my aunt Fanny Elizabeth Bettesworth. She was the eldest of 25 children and my father was the 24th so there was quite a gap (granddad had two wives). In the past I was in touch with Fanny's granddaughter but unfortunately have lost touch with her. The Bettesworth family came from Hayling Island in Hampshire (and further back from Sussex). Fanny died in Burgess Hill, Sussex in 1953. There is an Oliver Price married to a Rose Price on the Isle of Wight in the 1911 census so that could be him. Hope this helps a bit. If I manage to find the granddaughter or great granddaughter of Fanny I might be able to get more information.

Regarding George Price and Fanny Bettesworth's descendants. I would like to get in touch with Patricia who I used to correspond with in 2006. If anyone knows how to contact her could they please ask her to contact me on here. Thanks.

Fanny Elizabeth Price (nee Bettesworth) is my grandfather's daughter by his first marriage to Emily Rustill. On my tree we have her as married to George Price, then to Stephen Frost.
