Orkney / Re: Missing marriag record for Hendry Banks and Katherine Banks
« on: Monday 01 April 24 08:32 BST (UK)  »
It turns out Magnus was illegitimate, which explains why I couldn't find a marriage for his parents.
I found a record in the Orkney kirk sessions that states Magnus was born in fornication to Magnus Banks and Katherine Banks.

World War Two / Dunkirk

Apologies if I have asked this question previously.
My father often said on many occasions that his father was rescued from Dunkirk. My grandfather would have been 35 in 1940 and came from Caithness, Scotland. We have no idea what his regiment may have been. How would I find out more information about soldiers who were at Dunkirk?

No, I hadn't seen the marriage between George Gilchrist and Mary Carnaby, which is interesting  the 2 surnames are often linked. So far I have found 3 marriages between a Gilchrist and a Carnaby who all came from the parish of Tweedmouth, Both surnames also appear on baptisms for both parties. Many thanks for finding that marriage, it may be a connection.

Berwickshire / Missing baptisms BETWEEN 1765 AND 1771

Help needed to find missing baptisms (if any) between 1765 and 1771 for a Joseph Gilchrist and Margaret Carnaby who were married in Mordington, Berwickshire in 1765. They then moved to Stirling and had three children born in the parish of Stirling, Joseph 1771, Alexander 1772 and Robert 1775. I have searched in Mordington and Stirling for the missing baptisms but nothing was found.

Berwickshire / Re: irregular marriages at Lamberton toll
« on: Saturday 18 November 23 10:12 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the information on the book, definitely will try and buy this. I have never heard of irregular
marriages. Another Rootschatter told me to check out  Kirk Sessions for an irregular marriage record for my 4xggg. I eventually found them in the Stirling Kirk Sessions in 1777. Possible reasons for their irregular marriage is either he was English from Tweedmouth and not of the Scottish faith  or because she was about 7 months pregnant.  Now I just need to see if I can find any sort of marriage record!

Caithness / Re: Alexander Carnaby and Janet Downie
« on: Sunday 12 November 23 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
Wow, success, thank you, your help was invaluable! I found them in the
Kirk records for Sterling, they did indeed have an irregular marriage a few months before their first child was born in 1777. Now I need to find out why they had an irregular marriage. I'm also wondering if indeed he was English and not of the Scottish faith would he still be brought before the church elders and fined?
Not only did I find Alexander and Janet in the Kirk records but their son John (my 3x great grandfather) accused of fathering another child! Searching the Kirk records is not easy on the eyes but well worth the trouble! Many thanks again

Caithness / Re: Alexander Carnaby and Janet Downie
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
I have searched for several years for a marriage certificate for Lt Alexander Carnaby and Janet Downie  They were living in Stirling, Stirlingshire for their first child Mary born 1777 and by 1780 were living in Thurso.  Alexander was classed as a gentleman, salmon merchant and  freemason in Stirling and Thurso (he was the original founder in Thurso)He also spent some time in the Caithness  fencible regiment. I  have found many records for him and his children but they hold no leads. It's possible he and Janet just never got married, but considering his position i should imagine this would have caused too much scandal. This is the only Scottish marriage I cannot find out of thousands on my tree. Any help or direction would be appreciated.
