Armed Forces / Re: What is this uniform please?
« on: Sunday 14 May 23 17:36 BST (UK)  »
Thank you very much. Thats complicated my research. One of these men is supposed to be the father of someone born 1932 in West Sussex. I have the birth cert for her but her birth parents split up just a few years later and they must have divorced as the mother remarried in 1937. He didn't die till 1971 in Enfield. So how did he get to wear an American uniform? Could he have enlisted from this country or would he have emigrated, fought and then returned to the uk.
Intriguing to say the least. Any ideas anyone?

Technical Help / Re: FTM 2019

After a bit of oohing and aahing I decided to splash the cash on Ftm 2019, going for the full package of download and USB. Had to pay full price but delivery and vat added which bumped up price a fair bit. On hindsight think should have gone for just download as they give a link to do it again if your pc breaks down.

You can save trees onto the USB but in order to view them think you have to download the drivers from it again. Not too sure. It's not as easy to use as 2005 version and probably won't use all facilities on it but hopefully will keep my trees safe.
It does copy over all notes and photos and you can add as many ftm trees as you like. Just have to keep playing with it.

Thanks both for your replies. Have never had my tree on Ancestry so would be going down the same route as greenrig. Just out of interest, does it save all info from the old version, such as notes? Is there anything missing which needs to be put in manually, as I say I have a very large tree?

Probably keep the two trees on pc for a time., until such a time as it no longer works.

Technical Help / FTM 2019
« on: Saturday 30 January 21 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I have FTM 2005 on my PC and loads of info on it. It installed ok from just a copy of the disc (many years ago) on windows 10. It takes a while to open but does eventually. Thought it might be time to update to 2019 version in case I lose it. Seems 2019 is a stand alone upgrade so how do I copy files over from 2005 version.
Had a live chat with Mackiev and the chap said that if I have got fam tree files on computer it will pick them up. Seems a bit vague to me. Do I copy over with gedcoms or what.

Also has anyone bought this version. Do I really need to upgrade? Just a precaution really as never been synced with Ancestry.

" You will be able to open files from previous version into FTM 2019 directly without any prior conversion.
You can open FTW and .FBK files
.FBC files
.AFT files
.GED
FTW and  .FBK
You need to open FTM 2019 and choose Open option to open regular tree file and choose Restore option to restore backup. You just need to have tree files on computer where you are going to install FTM 2019".

The Common Room / Re: Two burials in one grave?

John was about 36 and single when he enlisted and supposedly never married after he was discharged with all those injuries. As you said he didn't die from his wounds but they probably impacted greatly on his quality of life. My Uncle suffered mustard gas poisoning in WW1 but survived the war only to live with the affect effects of it till 1957. I can remember visiting him when I was young and he had a spittoon nearby :(

I have received a reply to my email to Epsom Cemetery and it confirms what has been said on this forum

"Walter James Gubby is indeed buried in grave space K 735 in Epsom Cemetery as is John Richard Wilkinson.
This grave space is a public grave space and holds many remains of people who were buried in 1925 and 1926 but who were unrelated. In older days it was often termed as a common grave.
There is a granite marker placed upon this grave space to the late John Richard Wilkinson as he was a Canadian War Veteran."

I still can't comprehend how 13 could have been buried there. It must cover a decent sized plot or else I dread to think they were buried on top of each other without coffins. Heaven fordid!!!1

Yes Chris, that is the headstone I am referring to. The person also buried there is Walter James Gubby who had been a trainer, jockey and turf accountant and probably would have had a fair amount of money as he sold horses in 1887 worth up to 100gns. His widow was buried in a different grave with her daughter and there is a headstone for them at Epsom.

Did you mean there were 13 buried in that particular grave? That's unbelievable!!!

There are 7 burials for the family Gubby babies who have all been given a grave number, but don't know if there will be any headstones.

I found John Richard Wilkinson in the Canadian Archives. His attestation paper says he was born in London 30 June 1878, sister Mary Smart of Gillingham Kent.
