Europe / Re: WOYCKE and KLOSE - German families from present-day Poland

Have now found my Great Grandmother's Death Certificate on Ancestry which gives her father's name as August Klose and her mother as Amalie Klose nee Schmidt. Marie Luise Klose was born 25 June 1867 and died 11 Nov 1944 in Schneidermuhl. Her husband was confirmed as Paul Woycke. Details supplied by my Great Aunt Gertrud Woycke.  :)

Pommerndatenbank - Die Datenbank für Familienforschung in Pommern has provided me with family addresses in Schneidemuhl in 1934 / 1938. All the "Woycke' names in Schneidermuhl listed were part of my extended famiily. (My Great Uncles, Oma, Great Grandmother and Great Aunt).
Thank you Svenja.

Gertrud Woycke was "lost" when the inhabitants of Schneidrmuhl fled. It is believed that she was one of many who died by the roadside and was buried by the snow drifts in Jan 1945.

My Great Grandmother was Marie Luise Woycke nee Klose and born c 1874 and died aged 77 in Nov 1944 before the Russians took Schneidermuhl. She used to work in the Railway station as a cook. She was Lutheran.

She was married to Paul or Peter? Woycke, a furniture maker in Usch. He apparently shot himself rather than go bankrupt which led to the breakup of his family in about 1912. He was buried in Usch. I understand that the family could not visit the grave during the War years as the town of Usch was divided and the cemetery was on the wrong side of the border.

Europe / WOYCKE and CLOSE - German families from present-day Poland
« on: Friday 05 August 16 12:35 BST (UK)  »
I am wanting to research my mother's family ;
My Great Grandmother was born "Close" on a barge near Nagot-Spitze, part of the river Weichsel near Gdansk;
My Grandmother was born "Woycke" in Usch (now a Polish name), and then spent time in an orphanage in Posen after her father committed suicide about 1911.
My Mother was born "Woycke" in Schneidermuhl" ,now Pila in Poland.

I understand that a lot of the German records were destroyed after WW2 when this part of Germany reverted to Poland.

My German is limited.

Any suggestions on where/how to start looking for information?

Thankyou,

Mustang Sally

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Alexander ALLAN and family

Thank you  everybody...you're brilliant!

Lucy, I had seen that 1851 census and had wondered if it fit as some of the names fit with birth names that we had reviewed in NZ from 1864-1880.

Spades... I had a look at the reunion photo 1909 and then went looking for supporting news articles in papers past. I'm beginning to wonder if the infant Alexander was one of the 14 deaths (12 were infants) during the voyage of the "Helenslee"? There would be a Superintendent's report of the crossing which might show the names of the deceased but I'm not sure where to find that. Any thoughts?

Lucy,
The "Corbet" family is the one I have identified as being my husband's ancestors. They seem to spell their names with/without the extra "T". "Ballantyne" was Ellen Allan's middle name.

Quaker Family History / Re: Were "Non-members" buried by Quakers?
« on: Wednesday 03 August 16 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello Ben,

Thank you for replying.

William Guthrie married Eleanor Tarsey at St John, Clerkenwell in 1789.

I assume that he was the Quaker and she was not.

I believe that there were "Guthries" in Scotland that were of the Quaker faith but I have not traced where William came from originally.

The Guthrie burials all appear to be of the same family as you suggest. Maybe the "Pritchard" name comes from William's line.

Had a thought;

Maybe he was a "Mason" or "Miner" which would be in keeping with his son's occupation.

In those time didn't sons follow their dad?

Thank you  for your input.

"Mechanic" sounds good.

 I believe from my searching on "Family Search" (Index # M11628-1) that:
Alexander Allan married Mary Corbett  on 6 Jan 1862 , Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

That doesn't show me their parents though.
I believe that I know Mary's parents but am awaiting her death "printout" to confirm.

I didn't know of those websites so thank you for those.

Hi Rosinish

Attached is a copy of the death print out as suggested.

I can decipher most of it apart from Mother's maiden name and father's rank/profession

Mother's maiden name seems to start "Sha????fool"

Any thoughts would be appreciated otherwise I shall be patient and hope that the marriage printout gives me the information that I am seeking.

I know that Alexander lived in Galston Ayrshire before emigrating and was a Quarrier and Miner.

I believe the offer of land was too great to pass up.

The family began their time in NZ in Pokeno (Queen's Redoubt).
They arrived following the Maori Wars, so their start in NZ was pretty tough.
