Sorry DCB, yes I do mean Lower Church Gate. Thanks for the map. I have studied it long and hard and have found Church Gate and Lower Church Gate but I can't find Belgrave Gate at all. Is it not marked on the map. Perhaps it's the bit where the word TRAMWAY is printed? Anyway, what I wanted to know is how close they were and the answer would seem to be - very close. So thank you so much for that.

Oh that's good to know ShaunJ thank you. The main time frame I was looking at was 1840 - 1850 so that's great.

Leicestershire / Two streets - how close together?

Back in Leicester in the mid 1800s how close would Belgrave Gate have been to Lower Church Street. Does anyone know if 201, Belgrave Gate might have had some significance back then - say a workhouse address? I have managed to get photos online of both areas but can't seem to find out how close together they were. I would be grateful to find out anything about this.

I know what you mean about FB but I find if I just use it sensibly there are a lot of groups on there which I belong to - history groups etc. Also on FB there is quite a good group named Ancestry DNA but I find that there are so many members who belong to it from all around the world that if you answer a post you can never find it again when you return the next day. Although I love to read what 'experts' advice is there are times when there are too many experts and all with opposing views. Still it is possible to learn something which you didn't know before. If I need specific help I find this site to be really the best and it has the most helpful and knowledgeable members.

Thank you so much chempat, that was really interesting to read. I shall also follow up on the first link  as that might be really useful. I have to admit that it didn't occur to me to try FB, I just didn't, for a second, think that there would be a page with that title. I shall have to open my mind a bit more. Thanks you again.

I am trying to see if I can find an image of The Carpenters Arms in Skirlaugh during the 1850s and 1860s. I have an ancestors who was the landlord there during this time. His name was Josiah Johnson, I would love to be in touch with anyone else who is also descended from this chap. The Johnsons are a difficult family to research. How big is this village? It seems to have been almost totally populated by Johnsons.  :D

Well, this is true but as far as officialdom was concerned I didn't think that they would count a 'partner' back in those days LM.

Thank you LH for your help. I haven't read back thru everything either, I have to admit  :-[. I know that I should have and I think that that will be my task first thing tomorrow morning. If I remember I do think that Nicholas Harrison's mmn was Cook. The witness names were a family name and  pne other which I do not recognise - J. Chambers.

I have to say though that I am still bewildered by the name Foster which shows against Vera's name on the 1939 register ie - Vera Foster/Harrison/Owen which would tend to suggest that she married a Foster after her divorce in 1947 but there are so many Foster marriages and it could be anywhere in Britain. I did find a Vera Foster who died in Bridlington in 1978 but it's a long shot.
