Hi Everyone who kindly helped with my search for Mary's maiden name. I am convinced it is Smedley now.
I will send for a copy of James Smedley's will, I now know I had the wrong marriage Spendlove, thank you for that. Because I now live in France it takes forever for things to arrive in the post, so I appreciate
your patience. The correct marriage I believe is 7 Jun 1824, I will send for a copy of that one too.
It is great to know I am now on the correct family tree. Thank you again.

Hi to all those that were very helpful a few weeks ago. I finally received info  from the GRO
that they could not find the correct birth cert. for Ellen Clarke born abound 1842 in Sutton in Ashfield, or her sister Hannah born around 1840 in the same place. They sent me ones with the father being William, but I am sure the father is John Clarke,Blacksmith.Mother being Mary ?.
I have seen the first born child's James Smedley Clarke in Heanor, Derby, unfortunately it does
not give his Mother's Maiden name, which is what I am trying to establish. As Mary was married before marring John Clarke, but I only have  the name Marshall at the marriage, so I am still not sure what her maiden name was, maybe Mary Marshall or Smedley or something else. The marriage was on 24th Nov 1826, St Mary, Sutton in Ashfield.Any help greatfully received.Thanks.

Wow I am so impressed with the response on Rootschat I will certainly recommend it to my friends.
Especially a big thank you to Spendlove and Suz.
Donald Dawson who was an apprentice Blacksmith to John Clarke married Ellen Clarke his daughter,
something very romantic about that.
The family did move from Notts to Lincs and back again to Notts.
I have today sent off for a birth cert. for Ellen Clarke and her marriage cert.Hopefully the solution will be found on one of them, the missing correct Maiden name for Mary.
Thank you all for helping me especially deciphering the census place names too.
I will post the outcome when I receive the documents in the post. Smedley looks like a good bet.
Thank you again.

Hi
The census for my family are not unfortunately all in Sutton in Ashfield, Mary ? had her second marriage there and had all her children there. But her appearance on census are as follows:
1841, She was in Hoveringham,Notts.
1851 Lincoln St Nicholas. Lincs
1861 St Nicholas,Lincs
1871 St Mary, Notts.
John Clarke her second husband was a Blacksmith then Silversmith.
Her children were, James,Sabina,Mary Anne,John,Hannah and Ellen.
If her first husband ? Marshall, maybe she could be Mary Wilson/Broom/Stringfellow etc.
How do you find death records for her first husband. He must have died between 1820-1825.
I think Mary was born in 1801, but not exactly sure where, as each census is complicated.
Any ideas?

Sorry I don't know if this is the correct way to reply to a question as it is the first time I have used this site.
Anyhow- I did try looking for a Mr Marshall who died in Nottinghamshire between 1817-1825. But without a Christian name, not really successful.
The only marriage record I have for Mary and John Clarke getting married in 1826 in Sutton in Ashfield is England's Pallot Index records- no witnesses on the one liner part I can see.
In census -after 1841- place of birth for Mary Clarke were 1851 Farrington(difficult to read) Notts.
1861 Boston, Lincs and 1871 Sutton in Ashfield. Thank you, hope you can help.

My great, great grandmother Mary, married John Clarke in Nov 1826, in Sutton in Ashfield.
When she got married she used the name, Mary Marshall, however she was already a widow at the time. So I don't know if Marshall is her Maiden name or 1st Married name? I cannot find a record of her first marriage, it must have happened between 1817-1826. I believe Mary was born in 1801
in the region of Sutton in Ashfield, but without her real maiden name I am stuck. I do have her on all the census's from 1841, but then she was Mary Clarke. Any advice greatly received. Thank you.
