Family History Beginners Board / Was residence a medical facility?
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 00:43 GMT (UK)  »
A family member died in 1914 of tuberculosis at 60 Hartington Terrace in South Shields.   This is not where the family was living at the time, and I am wondering if the property was used as a sort of hospice or for medical isolation.  Thank you for any help!

Yes, the John Snaith in question would have been closer in age to the father, Francis.  Just conjecturing, but perhaps he was an uncle to the John Snaith I am interested in.  That John Snaith could have been named for his father's brother.
Thank you, Boo.  BTW, I do like your nom de plume!

Oooops, oh dear, math was never my strong point!  So glad you pointed that out, I guess I was excited with all the news and wasn't thinking clearly.

Many thanks to all of you for your great help.  I think perhaps taking out a subscription or whatever to the Durham Gazette archives might help me, but I get the gist of it from your helpful postings.  It does seem that the bench warrant was in 1843 (thank you, Maddys52) was the case and not tried until the following year.  Thank you, Ticketyboo and Bookbox--it does sound strange, as you say, for the son to be tried and 2 years in the gaol described by Craclyn sounds very severe punishment.  Perhaps the assault charge in 1849 is the same John Snaith.  He would have been about 38 and so perhaps just a mistake of a couple of years in his age.

Durham / Durham Assize Court

I found a record of John Snaith, aged 22 in 1844, tried in the Durham County Assize Court for perjury.  Apparently, he was sentenced to two years in prison.  I am wondering if this John Snaith is my great-grandfather--his parents were Francis Snaith and Elizabeth Dryden (or Drydon) Snaith and he was born in 1821 or 1822 in Easington, Durham.
I would be very grateful for any advice on how to research this: the identity of John Snaith, the trial and which prison.
Thank you. :)

Dear Boo,
thank you so very much for all the research you have done on my behalf.  I am grateful and impressed.  As you suggest, I have sent off for the death certificate.  I will post the information on it as soon as it arrives.
Thank you again,
Barbara

Family History Beginners Board / Re: When did Francis Snaith die?

Thank you very much, Garstonite.  I didn’t know about the Durham County Board and I have posted a Look Up Request, as you suggested.  I agree with you that the date and place you mention (1863 at Etherley) sounds very probable.  I will post any results I get.
I did go to GenesReunited and saw several newspaper articles that looked interesting.  But, apparently, I had to be a member to open up the articles.  I thought of paying the monthly fee for a platinum membership, but then I saw something about quite a lot extra for searches of newspapers and military records.  it was not quite clear (at least to me) and so I have contacted them for clarification before I invest in a membership.
I did look up the Durham County Adviser and came across a site just for newspaper articles, also available only to members.  Some of the articles looked interesting, and so I thought perhaps that would be a better choice.
I really appreciate your thoughtful advice.  Thank you very much.

Kay 99, thank you for the information about the marriage of Sarah Jane Snaith to James Cranston.  I had found records of Sarah’s birth and her time as a young girl with her family.  I was interested to know of her marriage, and also that her mother was living with her in 1881.
You are very kind to go to so much trouble for me.  Thank you very much.

Durham / Etherley churchyard or cemetery

I am trying to find information about the death of Francis Snaith, born abt. 1800 at Bishopton, Durham.  The date of death is July 14, 1863, and I wonder if there is a headstone or other record at Etherley.
thank you so much for any help.

Thank you both  so much.

I am very interested in the possibilities you suggest, Garstonite.
Francis Snaith was born at Bishopton, Durham.
He was married in 1820 at St. Helen-Auckland, Durham.
Son John born and baptize in Easington, Durham.
Other children were born at Carlisle, Cumberland (I think)
Houghton-le-Spring, Durham
Hamsterley, Durham.
It sounds as though he was a farm laborer moving from farm to farm?
His son, John, was married at the Parish Church of Saint Andrew in Newcastle-on-Tyne.

His widow lived with John and family in 1871 at 101 Bede Street in South Shields.  This is in the Tyne Dock area and John was working as a dock laborer.

I think the 1863 in Etherley, Durham, sounds very probable.  I will see if a death certificate is available.  I gather then that the freebmd list is not complete?

Thank you so much for these clues, which I will pursue.

Thank you, Kay99.  I will check into the widow at West Holborn.  Actually, John, her son, mentioned above was living at Royal Oak Inn, 159 West Holborn, South Shields in 1861 with his wife and three children.  He is said to be working as a laborer and an inn keeper.  When his daughter was born four years earlier, the birth certificate gave the address as West Holborn, but didn’t give a number.  Perhaps they moved to 159 or had lived there all the time.

I didn’t see the newspaper report of the death in 1856.  Do you happen to know where I might find that?

Were the Elizabeth Sneath and Sarah Jane Sneath mentioned in the newspaper article?  The name is Snaith not Sneath, but could be a misprint.
They seemed to use the same names over and over (obviously in honor or memory of a family member) but it does make it challenging to sort them all out!!

Thank you very much for the ideas to work on.

Gratefully, :)

Barbara
