Sussex / Re: Childrens Home Portslade

A bit late, but:
The Pennington-Bickford home was one of the last houses in Southwick, Sussex going east before Portslade; on the north side of the Old Shoreham Road.. It is now called Harmony House.
Believe that the Reverand's wife, lous, committed suicide, in Portslade, on hearing of her husband's death due to a broken heart at seeing his church - Clement Danes - burnt down in the blitz on London in 1941.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: marriage of William Howis to Eliza, Sussex, abt. 1847

My Great-great  grandmother was Silvester Howis(2), born 1827, sister to Eliza Howis who married Frederick Butler in Tasmania.
Silvester(2) and Eliza's mother was Silvester(1) Brooks/Howis. who married William Henry Howis.
GGGrandmother,  Silvester(2) Howis married Daniel Kemp as Silvester Brooks in Canterbury in 1869.
Daniel and Silvester(2) had 12 or more children from 1843 onwards. My Great-Grandmother was the eldest, born in 1843, also Silvester(3). She married Jeremiah Dartnell, about 1860 and they had 12 children.
William and Silvester(1) also had James How or Horos chr 8th July 1832 at Albourne and Abraham Howe chr 5th February 1837 at Ardingly.
Eliza Howse was chr 1st February 1830 at Cowfold.
These records are from the IGI, thus the different spelling of the surnames.

On the 1841 census, Silvester was in workhouse at Cuckfield aged 15.  I'm pretty sure that Eliza (Harriss ) and James were in workhouse at Hurtsperpoint aged 9 and 11.

Coming to this a bit late, but....
As far as I know, after their mother (Silvestia b1800ish ) died in 1837, and after a spell in Cuckfield Workhouse, Eliza was eventually deported to Tasmania.
Silvestia ( daughter ) b1827 Lindfield, married Daniel Kemp and was living in a tent on Copthorne common in 1851 ( the parents ages are wrong on the census ).  I say married, but I understand that they didn't actually get married until 1869 in Canterbury, and she used the name Silvester Brooks  !!!!  I guess that Silvestia b1800 and William Henry Howes never did marry and that her name was actual Silvestia Brooks.
Silvestia b1827 and Daniel Kemp had about 13 children, the oldest was again Silvestia, registered as Silvester Howis in Cuckfield in 1843, she was my Great Grandmother.
Daniel Kemp and Silvestia lived at 1 Primrose Ally, Forest Row in 1861 and continued to live in the East Grinstead area.
