ShaunJ that marvellous.

Do you think his children could be registered British because he was in the army, hence the reason I cant find a registration for them?

Hillhurst previously told me his occupation at discharge was 'House Painter'.  I also know he was a Verger.  Interesting combination.

Thanks again for that confirmation.

Spades,

I appreciate that information.  The only facts I know is that on the anniversary of his death, his wife Catherine inserted a 'In Memoriam' in the paper stating he was late Verger of St. Paul's Pro-cathedral, Melbourne and Sergeant H.M. 18th Regiment.  I have his only daughter Catherine being born in NZ c.1861 but I don't know how I know this!

Thanks again,

Now all that info is wonderful BUT I believe that may another family, nearly identical!

My John McCARTHY, died in 1882 at South Melbourne and was previously Verger of St. Paul's Pro-Catheral, Melbourne and 18th Regiment.

My Catherine McCarthy (wife of John), died in 1907 at Richmond.

Issue that I know of:

1. John Jeremiah. bc 1856 Lismore, Co. Waterford. died 1921, East Melbourne.

2. Catherine. bc 1861 New Zealand (I dont know how I know this).

3. Henry. bc 1866, dont know where.

4. William. bc 1868, dont know where.

In 1894 a Joseph McCARTHY, the youngest son of John McCARTHY of Lismore, Co. Waterford married in Melbourne BUT, I believe this is another John McCARTHY of Lismore!!!

Yes, it is a huge coincidence that there are two John Jeremiah's.  I have the MC for my John Jeremiah and it has his born at Lismore, Co. Waterford to the correct parents and the age fits.  Father's occupation also correct as the Verger.

The info from re the 18th Regiment is from 'In Memoriums' in Trove.

It's a bit of a mess.

Hi team NZ

Would anyone know anything about foot soldiers of the Irish 18th what arrived in NZ 1850's-1860's?  I'm looking for a John McCARTHY of Lismore, Co. Waterford, wife, and children and probably issue whilst in NZ.

The family ended up in Melbourne with John being Verger of St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral prior to his death in 1882.

Hi folks

I know this is an extremely old thread but hopefully someone still has notifications on.

After many years I've having another look at my Cornwall CHAPMAN family which has always been a the stuff of nightmares!

The trouble is generational like names with similar years of birth.  Lots of online tree's with probable mixed up data and question marks like mine.

BECKMAN sounds Germanic.  OP told us John's father was 'Hinirich' which could Heinrich.  Possibility that John could of been anglicized from Johann?!?!
