Hello cousin nelwild,

I can't believe I missed this post.  Frances' brother William was by x5 gr grandfather!

There are ALOT of STEPHENS / STEVENS about in the family but that doesn't help you with the father of Sophia.

Did you know that William STEPHENS was probably the son of Thomas STEPHENS and Mary nee STEPHENS.  The widow Mary married Joseph AKEHURST in 1787, Joseph being Fanny's brother!

The signature of Joseph AKEHURST in this thread seems to be the signature of the same Joseph AKEHURST as it's alike the signature on his 1792 MC to Elizabeth ELLMAN.  He would be Sophia's uncle.

The info re Bastardy comes from a UK Prison Hulk record.  In the Gaolers comments it reads:  Once in Gaol for Bastardy.

On the NSW convict indents it does state, no other convictions!

Thanks for your replies.

I believe John was a Collier when transported but I only know him as of Cheshire.  A relative told me he was residing at Newton during his trial for soap stealing.  There isnt a date or year for the bastardy incarceration.

There are few John GARSIDE's about in Cheshire of the right age.

Cheshire / Bastardy Case - c1830's.

Hi all,

Would someone be able to check if there was a Bastardy case mentioning my man 'John GARSIDE' as reputed father.  He was born Cheshire c1810 and transported 1836.  Records show he used the alias 'SMITH'.

His court records show that he had been in gaol once previously for Bastardy, and was married with one child.  Who he was married to or who the child was I am unsure.  I'm wondering if he them married the child's mother.  At the time of transportation he was supposedly residing in Newton.

Thanks in advance.

Hi team,

A very old thread I know, but I've just started looking at my POXON's after a number of years.

The OP asks about John POXON on the 1851, aged 63, born Lockington, Leics.  John married Hannah BOOTH in 1808 at Aston on Trent, Derbyshire and have at least 10 children there.  On both the 1851 and 1861 he says he is born at Lockington between 1786 and 1788.

If anyone could find his baptism that would be amazing.  There are others around the same time in Weston on Trent that others have claimed but there are other siblings with the same name and it doesn't sit right.

Many thanks,

Surrey / Susannah SPONG d.1702... What do additional notes mean?
« on: Wednesday 29 March 23 12:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi team,

Susannah/Susan SPONG was the first wife of my 8th gr grandfather Owen SPONG, although I can't actually find a marriage.  Susannah was buried at St. Lawrence, Chobham on 21 April 1702, as wife of Owen SPONG.

It seems in the notes it reads: Affidavit made 26 Apr.  What would this be referring to?!

Owen remarried a month later.

Hi All,

Fanny c1767 was my Aunty, her brother William my x5 gr grandfather.  They were the children of Joseph and Frances.  I've been told that the marriages are missing for this period because of the civil war, I could be wrong as it was a few years ago. that this was mentioned to me.  I too dont know Frances' maiden name.  Frances c1767 married William Stevens/Stephens and died c1855.  The Sophia Akehurst mentioned was probs her base born daughter c1787.

Lanarkshire / Re: Agnes LANG bc.1816- daughter of James LANG and Agnes SINCLAIR
« on: Friday 10 February 23 06:18 GMT (UK)  »
The DC reads that her father was James LANG, Farmer, Deceased.  Mother Agnes LANG, ms SINCLAIR, deceased.

It's as like everyone is made up although these names run in my family but not after another 2 generations.

I did have a thought that Agnes' son, who was my gr gr grandfather and Agnes' and James' eldest was maybe illegitimate but I have DNA matches a generation further back so he is definitely James' even though on the 1841 census when she ought to be pregnant they werent in the same household.
