Radnorshire / What's the word.....?
« on: Friday 22 March 24 02:53 GMT (UK)  »
Dear folks, I would like some help....
In the attached picture, a line reads "December 27th, Cimbriani Dr of Saml Morris by his <a word> was baptized". I can't for the life of me figure out what <a word> is even though it looks so simple. I've asked here because it's from the PRs for Llanfihangel Nant Melan, Radnorshire, so I'm wondering if there's something specific there....

England / John Shakespear
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 00:49 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings,
I'm trying to find a copy of a book, hopefully on line.
That book is "John Shakespear of Shadwell and his descendants 1619-1931". Familysearch has a copy but it's on film and they're not sending films out. Worldcat has several in libraries but they're a long way from Australia. There's one for sale but they want 1500 pounds for it.....
Any help greatly appreciated.

Are two small islands in the Caribbean, with a Dutch/French and British History. St Eustatius is currently Dutch, while St Croix is part of the US Virgin Islands. So to my question, does anyone know where the church records for them are kept?

Devon / Baring family of Exeter
« on: Tuesday 20 June 23 13:32 BST (UK)  »
Greetings,
Somewhen about 1725 plus or minus a few years, John Baring (originally Johan Baring born in Germany in 1697, married Elizabeth Vowler, daughter of John Vowler and Elizabeth nee Townsend.
They went on to have 8 children, John buried 1728 at St Petrock, Francis buried St Leonard 1736, John buried 1816, Thomas Vowler buried St Leonard 1758, Francis buried St Leonard 1737, Francis buried 1810 (this is Sir Francis, the founder of Baring's Bank), Charles and Elizabeth. I'm unable to find primary sources (PRs etc) for any of their births/baptisms, nor for the marriage of John and Elizabeth nee Vowler. So far it looks like just about all the trees on Ancestry etc have copied Brett's information. Stirnet has all the same dates and so on and so on.
So my question. Does anyone know of sources for the births/baptisms/marriage that can be regarded as reliable?

My research project is on Llandyfeisant graveyard on the Dynevor Estate in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  Watkin Lewis Griffies-Williams is the brother of Rev. D.H.T. Griffies Williams who is buried in Llandyfeisant graveyard.  I am currently looking into the family and came across the probate for Watkin Lewis G.W. Do you know who this Mary Williams is ?
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPJ3-WRNR
Name   Watkin Lewis Griffles Williams
Death Date   23 May 1877
Beneficiary's Name   Mary Williams
Event Type

Death
Event Date   25 Jun 1877
Event Place   England, United Kingdom
Event Place (Original)   Principal Registry

That would be a great research project. As far as Mary Williams is concerned, Watkin did have a sister, Mary Anne Caroline Catherine Griffies Williams baptized 12 Apr 1813, Myddfai, Carmarthenshire, Wales. By the time of Watkin's death, Mary was married to Henry Frederick Vaughan (they married in 1836) so it depends on when he wrote his will or if Watkin still referred to her as Mary Williams.

It might be a long shot but Caroline who died in 1907 had the middle names Mary Ann

Thanks for the note. Yes she did, so she could have been known as Mary. Also she is a daughter of David, so that makes it possible. And, she never married, so in 1876 she would still have the surname Williams.

Here's the newspaper announcement for the death of Mary Anne Caroline Catherine Vaughan, nee Griffies Williams. To me it seems unlikely that she would be mentioned in Watkin Lewis Griffies Williams' Will under her maiden name. What do you think ? https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3763531/3763536/53/Vaughan
The Carmarthen Journal and South Wales Weekly Advertiser

DEATH.
VAUGHAN.
On April 8th. at Strand House, Laugharne, Mary Anne Caroline Catherine Vaughan, widow of the late Henry Frederick Vaughan, aged 94.

Henry Frederick Vaughan died in 1898

Given that Watkin's will was dated 1876, I agree.

Interesting that you found that Herbert H. Griffies Williams was first buried in Llanfihangel Aberbythich and then later in Llandyfeisant. Can you remember where you read this ? I found these newspaper articles -

Um, I did say it was from memory and needed verification. From this it does look like I was wrong.

That still leaves the conundrum of Mary Williams.

Keith.
