I am researching george heriot the famous royal jeweller.

As far as the identity of his father is concerned, I agree with all the secondary sources which say that his father was George Heriot elder goldsmith 1539/40–1610.  However these secondary sources also claim that George Heriot younger's mother was Elizabeth Balderstone.

Based on my research to date I cannot believe Elizabeth was his mother.

Has anyone found any evidence in primary sources of his mother's name?

Thanks for all your replies, which contain some interesting info.

However I suspect that I may have to approach the present Earl of Rosebery to see if he can give me a proper source for the Primrose Blaw marriage mentioned in my original post.

Thanks again.

Hi there.

In the oxford dictionary of national biography it states that "Primrose, James (d. 1640), government official, was the second son of Archibald Primrose, of Culross, Perthshire, a law agent, and Margaret Bleau/Blaw, of Castlehill".  It is stated elsewhere that Archibald Primrose (who was a tax collector for King James VI) was their first son.

Can anyone provide a source for the marriage of Primrose and Blaw?

Thanks
