Yes, Karen, that is my great grandmother & the Max I am trying to locate after he disappeared from the Rochester area in the early 1900's. I have tried to contact the Hahn website to update this information. The people they have as living, including my father, have passed away and I have the dates, but I haven't been able to reach anyone as of yet. I just tried to email them again the other day. I also have city directories that I found on ancestry. That's how I found out that Louise became the sole owner of the saloon/restaurant in the early 1900's. After a few years passed, she was finally listed in the directory as a widow, but not the first couple of years. When I found another Diedrick that I was related to in ancetsrydna, I contacted him and now we are trying to establish our connection. I am hoping that if we can figure out our connection, I will be able to get back into Germany and find out more about my father's grandfather's family. Any suggestions you may have I would appreciate. Thanks again! Judy

Karen and Mike,
Thank you for the clarification and your suggestions. I appreciate all the help. my friend and I thought that the place was maybe Garz, but I'll check out Lärz too. I believe that my great grandfather's family may have come from northern Germany, but I am not positive. His name was Max C.W. Diedrich. Born around 1864 in Germany. He immigrated to the US around 1883. By the 1890's, he was married and living in Rochester, NY. He & his wife had a saloon/restaurant in Rochester and by the very early 1900's he just seems to have disappeared. My father never really knew what happened to him, so I don't have a lot to go on. The relative and I who are trying to figure this out, are 3rd cousins according to ancestrydna. His great grandfather was Frederick A. Diedrick and by 1880 or so he was in the US also. Frederick was born around 1850. His kids were born in NY state, not too far from Rochester and he received his citizenship papers in NY in a county courthouse not too far from Rochester also. Then his family moved out to the midwest. My 3rd cousin had this death notice. For us to be 3rd cousins, we are thinking that our great grandfathers were probably brothers, Max being the younger brother. After getting everyone's help with this notice, I am now thinking that Wilhelm was an older brother who stayed in Germany. Frederick's first wife passed away in May of 1891 leaving him with 4 children. I believe that someone in Germany must have sent Frederick Wilhelm's death notice and that is how my 3rd cousins mother came to be in possession of it. Does that sound plausible? Any suggestions for where I can turn next for additional information making the connection back to Germany? Thanks again to everyone. Judy

Karen, I had just gotten this written when I was notified of your additional post, thank you! I will check with my 3rd cousin and see if he ever heard anything about relatives having to do with boats or boating. Over here our relatives all seemed to be in farming on his side and businesses on my side. Thanks for the information though. Every little thing helps! :-) Judy

Europe / trying to understand german death notice for Wilhelm Diedrich
« on: Sunday 05 August 18 23:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
A relative and I are trying to decipher this. We believe it is a death notice for a relation in Germany. I had some help translating this from a friend who speaks and reads German. It appears to be a death notice for Wilhelm Diedrich. There are a few things that were unclear to us. #1.  It seems to say that Auguste Diedrich is both Wilhelm's daughter in law and daughter? #2. Could Schur be her maiden name: Geb. Schur; born Schur? #3. Why would her date of birth be in a death notice for someone else? #4. During what time period were death notices like these written? There wasn't a date written anywhere on the notice that I could see.

This is the translation we came up with:
This morning, about 9, deceased after long, painful, suffering, my rather good man and father, Wilhelm Diedrich in his 44th year. All those participating with deep mourning along with Auguste Diedrich, born daughter in law and daughter. The burial will be found on Friday, the 3rd of July, afternoon, held about 3.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could help us figure this out or provide us with any additional insight. Thank you so much.
Judy

Thank you to the moderator who switched my post to the Europe section, I appreciate your help. I can't seem to find any indication on my end as to who did it for me, so thank you to all the moderators who may work on this site.
