Armed Forces / Re: Deserting the Royal Navy in 1899 - what would the Navy do?
« on: Tuesday 14 December 21 18:07 GMT (UK)  »
His name, description and home address would have been published in the Police Gazette (I dont know if it was regional) and the RN would have left it to the Civil Powers to recover him and return him to the RN.

You are welcome, the Army do like their "in house" terminology.

He appears to have served with I Company that is letter I (based on his OC's rubber stamps on the right) because the "I" is very ornately written in the column on the left (the column below the word Kingston). He later transferred to H Company on 3 Dec 1939. I gather he was a Chief Clerk.  Following his commissioning he appears to have been Assistant Officer in charge of Barracks at Alexandria.
Hope this helps
Pete

The Common Room / Newspaper Library online subscription -v- FindMyPast
« on: Wednesday 24 November 21 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have subs to Ancestry and also FindMyPast, the latter particularly for using the Newspaper searches. Please can anybody tell me if a direct sub with the Newspaper Library would get me more/better coverage of UK newspapers than I currently get with FindMyPast.

Thanks Rosie
I'd tried both FindMyPast and Ancestry where I pay subs and where couldn't see evidence of post 1837 period. Then I tried a couple of the FHS suppliers but could only find pre-1837.

Hopefully there will be post 1837 marriages available somewhere, I just realised I have Lincs FHS PR Burials 1813-1900 so surely somebody will have done marriages ?
thanks
Pete
