Just to confirm, please
Are you saying anyone who served before 1920 will NOT appear in MoD records. So my man, if he is that, doubtfully served after WWI, if he survived when he would be 40 ish. Just checking if it’s worth sending off for his service record.

So, if MoD don’t have his records, who has early GG records.

How sad. Thought you had given me the short cut and avoiding MOD route.

I was obviously hoping to avoid the MOD route, as it can take 12 months when we don’t even know if it is our man. And may never know? Maybe the 1921 Census will be out before they answer (if he was still alive?)? Thanks for your help. Always appreciated. :)

To ShaunJ
Yes, but lack of Workhouse Records means we cannot identify the man buried at Worplesdon though by coincidence, this was the Baker family home at the time.

Thank you for your thoughts. One of those trees would have been mine created especially to see what hints there were for WAB, born 1882. Like where was he in 1901 (not with his Mother); or in 1911 (ditto); married?; and not on 1939 Reg using his birthdate. So the GG record would be a clue as to him not being in the Workhouse! Remember he had no named father and it was not his Mother’s first ‘base’ child - to the same man?

That is the conundrum. The death cert says he died in the Guildford Workhouse in 1900 and here, if the same man, he is in the GG in 1901. I have researched EVERY birth/death for every William Baker in Surrey (in and around), with and without the name, Arthur.

Thank you for web link to GG. It should or could be the answer but won’t link and load. Can you please check web address you gave for ‘find an ancestor’ please as nothing happens through the one that you gave me!

Thank you Jebber and KGarrard.

That was my understanding. That the records survived the warehouse bombing, as held by MoD in Glasgow and transferred to MoD in 2020.

I note in the 1901 Census all the records relate to ‘Trainees’ but does this mean they didn’t necessarily go on to enlist?

Will now go and check this website. Looks promising but won’t be the first false dawn.

Finding Grenadier Guard William Arthur Baker, born Guildford 21 Dec 1882 to an unknown unmarried and enigmatic Grandmother (to us) Ellen Louise Baker. So, if found, William would be my uncle.
He is shown only on 1901 Census record, RG13, Piece 634, F57, Page12 as being in GG. In Caterham. But No Regiment, No service Number so quite untraceable without GG enlistment details. Age 19 in 1901, so likely ‘enlisted’ in 1900 when 18 y.o. Can anyone help me find him and what became of him?
I tried TNA whom I thought held details and who were remarkably unhelpful, just sending me to MOD but with no Regiment/service number could not go forward.
