Buckinghamshire / Re: Samual Joseph COX of Wycombe?

A belated thank you to everyone who contributed to the discussion.

I am tracing my paternal grandmother's line and it brings me to Alice Louisa COX born 1867, daughter of William COX born 1935 and Caroline born 1837.

In case it helps anyone else out, Alice Louisa married Alfred ATTWOOD on 13 Oct 1855 in Greenwich. The witnesses were Sarah COX and Frederick COX.

I am also busy pursuing a family legend that there was gypsy and/or traveller blood in my paternal history. Has anyone researching this particular line of Cox heard of any such rumour, or found any supporting material? (I have already posted to the Travelling People forum of this website).

Re William COX born 1935

I think I have found him in the Great Marlow workhouse in the 1841 Census

Aged 6

With Jane COX, aged 30; Sarah COX aged 9, and George Cox aged 5.

Travelling People / HAMMOND family rumour
« on: Tuesday 23 August 16 23:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Many years ago my mother told me that my father's family had a scandalous background: an Irish traveller had married a Romany gypsy, and my father was descended from that line.

Many years later I have started to put together a history of my family, mostly with Ancestry and it has occurred to me that it might be time to also look into the great family rumour.

My grandfather was Edwin Ralph HAMMOND (1893), born of James HAMMOND (1857) and Matilda.
James HAMMOND was born of George HAMMOND (1836) and Eliza PALMER (1837).
George HAMMOND was born of James HAMMOND (1810) and Mary MISSLEBROOK (1813).
Eliza PALMER was born of Benjamin PALMER (1810) and Elizabeth TUPPEN (1810).

My grandmother was Eva Grace ATTWOOD (1896), born of Alfred ATTWOOD (1864) and Alice Louisa COX (1868).
Alice Louisa COX was born of William and Caroline.
Alfred ATTWOOD was born of Charles ATTWOOD (1837) and Louisa (unknown).

My family was based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, at the time these rumours were shared with my mother.

I have found some Hammonds listed in encampments but as yet no clear link to any of my tree. I have traced the Palmers back to Benjamin Sampson Palmer in Deptford in 1791, whose father was a baker, but in some places I'm still working on who married who! And the Misslebrooks are currently a dead end for me.

Yet to start working through the census detail to start filling in the gaps, and then will move to other links suggested on this board, but thought I would also ask here if anyone has come across any of these names in relation to travelling folk.

It could all just be a rumour, after all  :)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
