Gloucestershire / Richard Marshall marriage in Bristol (1790s)
« on: Thursday 07 December 23 21:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm looking for a marriage between Richard Marshall and Ann around 1790 in the Bristol area. There's a marriage on 5 Nov 1791 in St Philips and Jacob between a Richard and Anne Marshall. It could be this one. The only snags are: their first child was baptised on 12 Mar 1791; him and all their other children were baptised in Bedminster, and the marriage register has Richard and Anne as both OTP.

I know neither of these necessarily preclude this marriage but just wanted some second opinions.

Best wishes
Samuel

Good finds! The one in Walthamstow is particularly near. Thank you

Hi Ciderdrinker,

Wow great work. I had seen that Ellen Hill burial and was unsure about it given the shortened name, but it does seem the most likely to be her you're right.

Yes there could be a husband before both Penry and Edward. Bad run of luck for her. I guess it's also possible of course that Eleanor wasn't actually born in Bromley and was just living there when she married Edward? I guess without more information we can't know though.

I'll research the Cullimore line for now. Thanks very much
Samuel

Hi all,

I need help with a brick wall that's been bugging me for ages. Edward Hill married Eleanor Penry (widower) at St Mary, Bromley St Leonards in 1801. Both are listed OTP. I can't find a record for Eleanor's first marriage. When I look at Bromley St Leonards baptisms for Eleanors there's an Eleanor Cullimore in 1767, and Eleanor Briggs in 1780, which both could be possibilities. I couldn't find any Penrys born to an Eleanor between 1791-1801 so I don't think she had any children in her first marriage.

Edward is listed in the 1841 census as living with his son Thomas Hill on Balaam Street, Plaistow working as an ag lab. His age in this census is given as 64 and him as being born out of county.

Any help finding anything more on either of these would be really appreciated as I've been banging my head against it for ages. Eleanor and Edward's children were: Lydia, Charles, James, Mary, Maria, Thomas.

Best wishes
Samuel

Wales / Re: Tovey middle name

Needn't be related i.e. Midwife, Nurse, loved friends, admired hero(ine)s
But if you've got it in two generations, hmmm.

Yes indeed. With more than one individual too.

If you/anyone else is interested. The first person to appear with the name in my tree is Charles Tovey Edwards (Swansea, 1840). Born to John Isaac Edwards and Charlotte Rees. To be fair I haven't been able to find Charlotte's parents so there could be a link there, but I couldn't find any Tovey/Rees marriages

Thank you both.

Yes it does feel like it should be a surname to me and given as a middle name in honour of that ancestor, but I can't find any Toveys in my ancestry. Hmm ...

Wales / Tovey middle name

Hi all,

Just a quick question: do people if Tovey was ever used as a common middle name in its own right? It appears in two generations of my family in Glamorganshire between 1840-1870. I know it as a Welsh surname and was wondering if this means it points to the surname of an ancestor I have not found or if it could just be used standalone.

Best wishes

Devon / Re: A baptism for Henry Drake (1650-onwards)

Thank you very much. Yes Salcombe Regis makes more sense there. Just checked out the Drakes in Salcombe Regis and there are similar names there which would seem to indicate the same family, now just to track down Henry! Thank you

Devon / A baptism for Henry Drake (1650-onwards)
« on: Wednesday 25 October 23 15:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm looking for a baptism for Henry Drake. He married Priscilla Herring in Heavitree, 1697 and they had 12 children together in Awliscombe. Priscilla was born Sidmouth, 1675. I know it's not the Henry Drake born 1673 in Ermington as he is buried at Lympstone in 1717. There are other Henry's in the 1670s born in North Devon.

The only other possibility I've found is Whitchurch in 1648. This would likely connect him to the Francis Drake family and there are public trees on Ancestry citing this as his baptism, but I know not to trust those and especially when there is an incentive to find a link to a historical figure! It would also make him 71 at the birth of his youngest child.

The only thing that makes me consider this baptism more is Henry's descendants were keen to keep the "Drake" name in the family, with it frequently appearing in middle names until the 1900s, including some people straight out called Francis Drake (x). My grandad also said that he'd been told his family was related to Francis Drake. Obviously this could have just been them creating a link based on the surname that didn't actually exist.

If it's any help, Henry and Priscilla's children were:

John, Samuel, James, William, Francis, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Philip, Anna, George.

Thank you
Samuel
