Warwickshire / Re: Thomas Moore (Home Child) in Birmingham and Coventry
« on: Wednesday 17 October 18 17:25 BST (UK)  »
I would agree with some of the comments made earlier about following the Moraghan lead as I have been trying to sort out my own family lineage with similar problems to yours. My family is Moore but going back to my g. g. grandfather I have recently found out that his family name was actually Moraghan and not Moore. On the UK GRO records out of 9 children, 1 was registered as Morican, 6 as Moore, 1 as Morighan and 1 as More. On the Roman Catholic records for St Peters, Broad Street, Birmingham, 3 are baptised as a Moraghan, 3 as Moore, 1 as Moriken and 1 as Moor. My g. g. grandfather, James (Moore) Moraghan married Ann McLoughlin in Birmingham in 1850. James’ father is given as Owen, farmer, Roscommon. Next door to James and Ann in Birmingham on the 1851 census was Roger Morgan and his wife Catherine née Burke. However, on further research I have found out that Roger Morgan is actually Roger Moraghan and he is also from Roscommon (likely to be an uncle of James – research still ongoing) and his wife Catherine is from Galway.
If your Thomas is the one mentioned above then it could well be that his parents are the ones who died in 1901 and 1908 in Birmingham (Bridget Moraghan 1901 at 73 years old, volume: 6d Page: 126 and Thomas Moroghan 1908 at 80 years old, volume: 6d Page: 50).

Roscommon / Re: Marriage at Roscommon

Here's something that may be of interest ..

On Monday 17th July 1865 (Saunders’s News-letter and Advertiser, Dublin) an article under Sale of Valuable Life Policies states that

No. 5 - Policy on life of Basil Sandys, Esq., formerly of Durham Abbey, County of Roscommon, in Standard Life Office, dated 9th January 1840, for £500 and bonuses; annual premium, £12 8s 7d., payable 9th January. The bonuses have been applied in reduction of the premium, which was £8 8s 9d. Said Basil Sandys is now in his 64th year.

(the £8 8s 9d is difficult to read)

If you go to My Orders on the GRO page it will give you an estimated despatch date.

I agree with you. I am currently looking to find anything relating to Andrew.

I also did a search of all the Mary Keory's getting married between 1815 and 1835 (92 of them) but found no Richard Moore as spouse.

Thanks again for your input.

Having pondered on anneclares post I took a further look at the records for marriages this time and widened the search to find any Richard Moore's married to a Keory/Keorly/Carew/Carey and came across the following....

10th August 1831 St Mary's Church, Clonmel. Richardus Moor married Maria Carey.

To me it seems too much of a co-incidence that anneclares find also matches up with my find.
What do other people think? (I have attached the record for consideration).

I didn't realise that there were those variations in names. I will make a note of it for the future. I have already found out that my great, great grandmother was not a "Mack" but a McLaughlin after a considerable amount of research. The number of different spellings and variations can be quite bewildering.

Again, many thanks for letting me know. Every little bit of information I have gathered has helped me to understand the 'nuances' of genealogy.

It is a possibility but the baptismal date would have been when James was about 2-3 years old and his mother's name was Mary Keary/Kearly (and not Carew) as shown at his marriage to Ann McLaughlin.

Many, many thanks though for your input and I will add your find to my database - just in case. I am finding that going through the St Mary's and St Peter & St Paul records are very time consuming and I am concerned that there are so many 'blank' entries that I may never find what I am looking for - par for the course I suppose.  :)

Thanks for your advice. I have decided to download the relevant years (and one year either side) and see if I can use software to enhance some of the entries. Lucky I went to Specsavers today!  8) :)

Many thanks for the link. I'll try and decipher the handwriting  :)
