Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Hull and Sculcoates
« on: Tuesday 20 February 24 12:43 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace my family who moved to Sculcoates between 1881 - 1885. In 1881 they were still living at Inveresk & Musselburgh, Midlothian (now East Lothian) in Scotland. In 1885 my 2nd Great Grand Uncle James Ness Wilson married Fanny Campbell in Sculcoates. Both had lived in Inveresk in 1881. James & his Robert brought their widowed mother Janet Wilson née Ness to South Shields, Durham where she died 1893.
James & Fanny died within a couple of months in 1934 at Sculcoates but I don't know which cemetery if anyone can help.

I am not convinced Fanny or Frances/Francis was her first name because there were no birth in Scotland in the year or place she's given on various records. I am sure her birth name was Ann. Her father is named as Moses Campbell on her marriage record. But I don't know how to open/source their marriage record. I managed to get her death record from the GRO but can't work out how to do the same for the marriage.

Hope you all can see this reply, I live in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland, I am researching all the headstones in my area. I found your chat while looking for information on Ruth Beattie née Gillespie. I've added a picture of her headstone to Find-a-Grave.

I am still trying to add information to help her timeline and tell her story. In the 1921 Census she was living in Dunbar with her 2 daughters. I'd be happy to add any more information on the find-a-grave website if you are happy to share.

Midlothian / Re: Burial Index's for Newbattle and Newton
« on: Monday 05 April 21 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I visited the Newbattle Old Cemetery recently, but without being able to find my family plot and headstone. I wrote to Midlothian Council who replied with a copy of the layout by plots. I've attached a PDF file of the layout to help people potential locate plots if you know the plot number.

When I visited Newbattle and Lasswade I took some random pictures, uploaded then to find-a-grave with a little research. I also found out about neighbouring plots to my James Stewart and have added them also with some research. I hope to revisit and take much much more pictures and upload them to Find a Grave which I use because it freely available with minimal ads and easy to use.

I am still trying to see if any other of my Stewart Family are in this cemetery.
My unaccounted for Family
Jane Stewart (b.1839 Penicuik) entry in 1841 census (suspect died before 1851)
Marion Stewart (b.abt 1841 Lasswade - 1913 Colinton, Edinburgh) married James McDougal
James Stewart (b.1843 Newton Village) entry in 1851 census only
Janet Stewart (b.abt 1845 Lasswade) entry in 1851 census only
William Stewart (b.abt 1848 Roslin) entry 1851 & 1861 only
Adam Stewart (b.abt 1850 Roslin - d.1925 Lasswade) married Helen Reid
Elizabeth Stewart (b.abt 1853 Lasswade) entry 1861 & 1881 only (married Griffin but not UK records)
Isabella Stewart (b.1856 Lasswade - 1887 Dalmeny, near Queensferry)
Margaret Stewart (b.1862 Lasswade) Suspect she married a John Murray Leishman both died at Errol
Jessie Williamina Stewart (b. 1866 Lasswade - d.1907 St George Edinburgh) spinster

Elizabeth Griffin nèe Stewart is someone I really want to find out more about but have hit a road block. She had a daughter Eliza (1879 Stobhill - 1882 Borthwick) and a son Charles (1877 Stobhill - 1945 Edinburgh) he married a Isabella Adams.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Re: Smith and Finlayson of Haddington etc.

Hi, I have been taking photo's of headstones in graveyards/cemeteries around East Lothian, transcribing them and adding a little research to the Find-a-Grave website.  I use it because it's free and open to all.

I have just come across the memorial for James Finlayson & Catherine Smith their sons William & George. He was a Saddler in Dunbar. William was interred at Haddington, but James, Catherine & George are at Dunbar Parish Churchyard.

P.s.

In all my research I've watch the evolution of name usage. It was common practice for surnames to be given to children as first names. I've a GGGGGranfather called Johnston Fell. Also watch names changed from Christian to Christina for girls then boys being called Christian.

I've been researching My Family Tree's for a good few years now. I've also taken an interest in taking pictures of Headstones/Memorials/Markers, transcribing them and doing some light research to give more depth to people. Mostly it's in and around Dunbar, East Lothian in Scotland. I add this to the Find-A-Grave website because it's free and easy to use globally.

I've just added a picture & information of an Alexander Henderson & Margaret Elizabeth Sked's memorial (Dunbar Parish Church). https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/223528617/alexander-henderson I noticed Smollet/Smollett's grave has been added to this website too (she's in Garvald, East Lothian) but as yet there is no picture of which I hope to get.

I've added some research which I believe is correct, but if there are any mistakes I am happy to be corrected.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Re: Raeburn Family of East Lothian

Your James Raeburn is indeed the son of James Raeburn and Mary Reid. I taken a picture of his brother Alexander's headstone at Dunbar Parish Churchyard and added it with transcription and a little research to the Find-A-Grave website. Alexander was a ship master which may be an indication to how James became a joiner. (ship building/repair perhaps.) To date I haven't discovered their parents grave. But I am slowly working through all the cemetery to add to the Find-a-grave website because it's free to everyone, and easy to use.

« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 21:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am randomly adding adding pictures of headstones at Dunbar Parish and Deer Park, transcribing them and a little research on people then uploading to the free to use Find-A-Grave website. I've added a good few hundred already with much more. There are no on-line access to the inscriptions, but them can be looked up at the Dunbar Town House (History Society) and the John Gray Centre in Haddington. It's a slow process but I am hoping to have added everything I can find to the Find-A-Grave website in time.
