Shropshire / Re: William Lomas - 2 or even 3 different birthplaces...

Hi there
Thanks for your reply. I'm afraid I've been busy moving back to the UK since I posted, and my family history file is in deep storage. But as far as I remember, after I posted my original question, I got the Marriage Cert, and William's father turned out to be a Samuel Lomas, collier, Shropshire, but then I couldn't trace Samuel's birth.
If it's any help to you, my William moved to Newmarket and married a Julia Pryke, but without my file, I can't give any dates.
Good luck with your own search.
Best Wishes
Mark

Shropshire / William Lomas - 2 or even 3 different birthplaces...

Hi.
I'm trying to trace a William Lomas. On 1901 Census (Newmarket), his birthplace is Muchley, Shropshire, abt.1860. On 1891 Census (Bucks), it's Wolverhampton... quite close on my AA road Atlas. I have a possible sighting of him in 1881, before his marriage - looks like a likely candidate, similar job etc... - but on that one, his birthplace is Kemberton.

Searches for his birth don't point to anything conclusive.

Does anyone know the area, or the history, well enough to shed some light ?  I've ordered the marriage cert to pin him down, but in the meantime, any help would be really appreciated.
TIA
Mark

I saw that, but the age was a bit out, and on the 2 later censuses where 'my' William is with Julia, his birthplace is Wolverhampton (1891) and Muchley (Shropshire)... I checked the map, and Kemberton and Muchley are far enough apart that they're not the same place, IYSWIM...  I haven't discounted him - it's just that there's no evidence to link him yet. As he's on my direct line, I'll probably order a marriage cert for him and Julia, and hope that pins him down.
Thanks
Mark

Do you have William Lomas in 1881 - RG11/1675 Folio 45 Page 37 at 1 Pecks Cotts, Newmarket All Saints, Cambridgeshire (birthplace Shrops Kemberton)

Thanks for the replies and the welcome.
Hope I'm doing right by replying to 3 replies in one post...

I have no BMD Certs yet - I'm getting all the free info possible, then I'll order certs for any brick walls that I come up against.

I have the marriage ref. for William and Julia - Newmarket, 3b 691 (this may prove to be brick wall #1)

I have 1891 and 1901 census data for William & Julia (Crofton, Bucks and Kentford)

1861 and 1881 census for the George Pryke household - Kirtling.

I also have the marriage of George P and Elizabeth Howe, June 1838, and the death record for George Pryke Dec 1890, Newmarket 3b 349.

TIA for any more help.

Cambridgeshire / PRYKE/HOWE/LOMAS - Kirtling/Newmarket area

Hi. Newbie here. I'm at the early stages of researching this - I can find some census and BMD info, but if anyone has info on the following, up or down, I'd be more than grateful :

George Pryke, b. abt. 1818 in Lidgate, Suffolk. Married Elizabeth Howe in 1838, Newmarket, and settled in Kirtling, Cambs.

Their daughter Julia Pryke married a William Lomas, groom/stablehand/domestic servant in 1884, Newmarket. I'm particularly interested in William, but 2 censuses show different birthplaces - Wolverhampton and Muchley, Shropshire...

I have various siblings listed if the surnames ring any bells.

TIA
