Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Roecliffe Brick and Tile works - Moses Gough

Yes, I have read these reports. Also found a tile on top of the school wall with Moses Gough signature on it. Would really be interested to see if any old photos exist of the brick works showing the workers. Have never managed to find a photo of my great grandfather.

Would anyone have any information on the Roecliffe Brick and Tile Works where my Great grandfather Moses Gough was the manager in 1911?

Many thanks,

Graeme Sheldon

Yes, I noticed about the twins both dying after mother in childbirth. Twins both born in Birmingham so it seems he was living in Ecclesfield in 1841, married in Manchester in 1846, living in Birmingham 1847 and then stayed there the remainder of his life. Interested in how he met Amelia Sheldon. First record is 1851 census when she was his housekeeper. Any ideas?

Could anyone help me research Amelia Sheldon b1828 Birmingham. In 1851 she was a housekeeper to Valentine Brothers, by 1861 she was living as Amelia Brothers, in 1866 she married Ralph Schmidt as a widow and Valentine Brothers married the same year to Selina Foxall as a widower.
I cannot find any marriage records for Amelia and Valentine or a birth record for Amelia. Her marriage record to Ralph Schmidt says that her father was called John Sheldon, Artist.
Also an 1841 census for Amelia Sheldon would be useful.
Anyone willing to look into this?
Thanks
Graeme

I am trying to identify the correct John Sheldon through the census records. I have full access to Ancestry and findmypast having difficulty identifying a common thread.
The problem starts with George Sheldon my GG Grandfather who I can accurately trace back to the 1871 census lodging with John Thomas Green and family in Thornaby. George's marriage certificate from 1873 indicates his father as John Sheldon, watchmaker.
George is shown as born in Birmingham but there are no John and George Sheldons living together from Birmingham prior to 1871.
But there is a John Sheldon, painter lodging with a William Green, watch hand maker in Birmingham in 1861. Is it just coincidence that this John Sheldon (possible a watch face painter?) is living with someone called Green and his "son" George is living with someone called Green?

Probably too many assumptions but any help in untying the tangled knot would be appreciated.

I need some help in finding more about John Sheldon, shown as unmarried in the 1851 census in Birmingham, lodging with William and Ann Green with a 1 year old "visitor" called William Sheldon. Can anyone find any birth records, death records or other censuses to confirm their identity.

Thanks for the advice on West Bromwich rather than using Birmingham. This identifies some possible individuals, unfortunately George's marriage Record states his father as John, a watchmaker and none of the identified George Sheldon's have a father named John. I realize that George may have made a mistake with his father's name and occupation, but why?

How did people in the 1870's prove their identity when starting at the iron works? My GG Grandfather George Sheldon moved to Thornaby around 1871 and was working at the iron works as a puddler, living in Thornaby. After that date all the marriage and census records are consistently showing that George was born in Birmingham around 1844. Unfortunately I cannot find a George Sheldon born around 1844 in Birmingham which leads me to believe that this may not have been his real name. When he started at the iron works would he have needed to prove who he was and if so what would they have requested from him?
