Wiltshire / Re: Sherston Magna baptism - SHERWOOD

Hi Dave

There is a marrage in Sherston Magna between John Shearwood and Katherine Rice on 14th May 1776. I have the name Rice in my family tree, from Sherston, but not a Katherine. That said, the name Rice was very common in Sherston.

I now have the birth certificate for Mary Ann Harrington born 16th October 1847 in Gosfield and indeed her mother was Mary Ann Harrington, formerly Tyler.  The Mary Ann Harrington who married Thomas Gilbey was born born on 16th August 1847, but in Wethersfield.  Free BMD lists two Mary Ann Harrington born in the 3rd quarter of 1847 in the Braintree District.  Whereas the only Mary Ann Harrington born in the 4th quarter of  1847 was born in the Halstead District.  Interestingly Wethersfield is in the Braintree District, but Gosfield is in the Halstead District.

I now know that my Mary Ann was the daughter of Mary Ann Tyler and I have learned the lesson not to believe all you read on public trees on Ancestry.

Once again thanks to all you good folk who helped me on this one, which means I won't have to tell my Tyler cousins in Australia that they aren't my cousins after all.

Hi Mike & Kevin

Thank you both very much for the info.  Firstly I stopped my subscription to Ancestry so I can't check the public members tree, although I think it was more than one tree giving the info that suggested Mary Ann Tyler's daughter Mary Ann Harrington married a Thomas Gilbey.  There was even a photo of Mary Ann Harrington.  So I can't check to see what the source was.

I had previously a note about Hannah Harrington and it certainly looks like it was her daughter who married Thomas Gilbey and therefore my previous research was correct and my Mary Ann Harrington was the daughter of James Harrington and Mary Ann Tyler.

I am now going to send for the birth certificate of Mary Ann Harrington born 16th October 1847 in Gosfield, just to confirm this.  You are right about Ancestry trees, but with more than one tree suggesting I was wrong I thought I obviously was.  Lesson learnt there eh.

Thanks again for your help and to everyone else.  I'll post the result of the birth certificate, which I trust will show the mothers maiden name.

Dave

Hi Mike

Thanks for that info, which as you say, doesn't help me.  The question now is who is the Maryann/Marianne who married James Harrington and had a daughter named Mary Ann; born 1847?

Marianne Turner is the only person to appear on the same marriage page as a James Harrington, other than a Mary Ann Sewell in 1842 in the Dunmow Registration District.  I think I'll have to get the birth certificate of Mary Ann Harrington and hope that it will show the mothers maiden name.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info Suffolk Sue.  That would seem to be my Mary Ann Harrington.  Unfortunately I still can't confirm that were parents were the James Harrington and Marianne Turner, who married in 1845, although it is likely that is the case.

To add to my woes, the Richard and Samuel you mention, I have down as children of James Harrington and Mary Ann Tyler !!  I guess I will have to sent to the UK for Mary Ann Harrington's birth certificate.

I have been doing research for some years and I always thought that my 2 x Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Tyler was born around 1844 in Gosfield and that her parents were James Harrington, born Wethersfield around 1815 and Mary Ann Tyler.

Recently I have discovered via Public Trees on Ancestry.co.uk that this Mary Ann Harrington married someone by the name of Gilbey.  I have the marriage certificate of my Mary Ann Harrington, who married a James Clarke in Wethersfield in 1868.  Her age is shown as 22 years, making her year of birth aorund 1846.  I have also found a marriage between a James Harrington and a Marianne Turner in the 4th quarter of 1845 in the Halstead District, which covers Gosfield.

Has any one got access to Parish Records and can confirm Mary Ann Harrington's parents?
Unfortunately Mary Ann was a common name among Harrington's.

Many thanks to everyone for your replies.  The information you have given is great and I will now be able to do some more research.  Yes I guess Thomas may have met and married Matilda somewhere other than Suffolk.  He had certainly left Suffolk by 1836 when William was born in Maidenhead and interestingly all the other children were born in Chelsea.

Once again. many thanks

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Thomas JACKSON - Bury St Edmunds

Hi

I have been researching my ancestors for some time now and have had great success on many branches.  However I have hit a brickwall with regard to my 3 x great grandfather Thomas JACKSON who was born in Bury St Edmunds in 1810 (21st Oct is his likely christening date).

I know he married someone called Matilde or Matilda, who was born in Mendham in 1811.  I believe Mendham is in Suffolk, although I have seen references to Norfolk.  I am desperately trying to find the maiden name of Matilde and where and when she married Thomas.  I would also like to find the name of Thomas's parents.

Can anyone help me.
