Northumberland / Re: DUNCANs - Longbenton
« on: Sunday 24 July 22 17:26 BST (UK)  »
This has made for fascinating reading for me, though I know this post was some time ago! George Duncan was my 5x g/grandfather, my line is through his son George Lyon Duncan & his son John Duncan. I’ve always been curious about the middle name Lyon popping up in many of the children but I still haven’t found the source which I’ve always assumed is the maiden name of a woman who married a Duncan, but there’s plenty time yet!
I was interested to read your comments about David Duncan too.. I’m on Ancestry & there are many trees with copious amounts of pictures & stories about him & his exploits in the early railways. In fact it looks like he may have had a part to play in the invention or manufacture of railway points. I have googled this but couldn’t find him but there are pictures of his Patent from the Queen & all sorts awards. If you can access Ancestry my tree is Gibson Family Tree, name JoeyD13SS I’d love to know how far you have progressed!

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Woodhorn - George Duncan
« on: Sunday 24 July 22 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Sally
It’s a long time since you posted this query but I’ve just been posting a general search on George Duncan & came across your post. I’m on Ancestry & there are a lot of trees that include George, who is my 5x g/grandfather. I haven’t seen one that have opted for the baptism here in Woodhorn but that is the one I’m most inclined for I’m just searching around for other corroborating evidence.
If you’re interested in sharing what we each have please do get in touch.
Jo

If there are any descendants of John Gibson 1848-1924 who see this, Tyne Waterman of South Shields, you may be able to help... I’ve been looking for many years for the WW1 medals of my g/grandfather George Duncan Gibson 1880-1920, RNR 4649 who was one of John Gibson’s sons. I have all of his original paperwork concerning the award of his medals & Mention in Dispatches but no medals. It’s a long shot but I’ve always hoped that one day they may turn up. He has 3 g/grandchildren who would love to see them. I would of course be willing to pay for them. TIA

Wicklow / Winnifred Murphy b about 1831 somewhere & d. 16/4/1888 in Arklow
« on: Thursday 14 October 21 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Winnifred Murphy was my 2xg/grandmother marrying my 2xg/grandfather Andrew Byrne 1826-1890 in Arklow on 24/1/1852. He was a shoemaker, they had 8 children as far as I’ve found to date & witnesses & sponsors on the marriage & baptism registers don’t include anyone with the Murphy surname.  The marriage register does not state where she came from either. From her estimated age at death she was born around 1831 but this could be a very rough estimate.
There are a couple of possibilities of babies born around that time, one in Carlow, although the parents names don’t correspond with any of their children’s names & one in Tipp which does correspond. I’m looking at trees of DNA matches to try & help too. I’m just wondering if I’m missing anything & should look somewhere else? I’ve done searches on all of the usual sites. Someone did say there was a birth in Glendalough but I haven’t found that myself. The fact that she doesn’t have anyone involved in any of her baptisms suggest she wasn’t ‘local’ or there was some kind of issue?
Any advice or is anyone else related who can steer me please? TIA

Yes these Byrnes are definitely mine too! My grandfather is there on 1911 Census.
@ashlingb21 my tree is on Ancestry if you have access too, you can see what else I have on the Byrnes, Farrell families. Let me know & I can give you the details
I am struggling with Winnifred Murphy who married Andrew Byrne 24/1/1852 if you have any info?
We will be related, not sure what the relationship is?

Oh I hadn’t actually considered that, Thank you! I do see some where the name has been erased from the sides. Have absolutely no idea who or why people do that but I’d wondered about that too.

Hi
Realise it’s some time since you posted... I’m wondering if you know more about your g/grandfather now & if his parents were James Byrne & Bridget ‘Biddy’ Farrell? My late grandfather was Joseph/ Joe Byrne the youngest of said couple, born 1905 & the two men are so alike it’s uncanny. If I can work out how to post a pic successfully I can show you. My grandfather was also a Merchant seaman.
I only have an approx DoB for James Byrne Jr & that he married a Susan. I’m hoping you see this sometimes I would love to hear more & exchange a picture!
