Thank you everyone for the work, and comments.  I have researched the info you provide, and am more confident that it is correct. Never believed in-law's as it brought them back to the last King of Ireland

Sadly there is no further information on the Order.  I will just endure the frustration and continue looking.  Thanks for the assist

There is a bit on the history of Heathfield Park here
https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000203

As John Silvester appears to have been a servant there c1833 I doubt that there will be any information on him.  Do you have a copy of the bastardy order, I wondered if any more information was given on it.

No sooner do I say I can't find the Bastardy Record then it shows up.  Here it is

Mother's Name: Zebedee Mary, St. George's Parish, Grosvenor Square,London
Father's Name etc: John Silvester, Heathfield Park, Nr. Uckfield, Sussex servingman. Male child born at Damerham on 20 February 1824

As for the dentist reference, no idea.  I vaguely remember (about 2 decades ago) she mentioned she spoke with a researcher in England who found that out.  She is trying to find that letter so I can figure things out

I think there is a very good possibility that the baptism is correct.  I wonder if John was missing as there is no occupation listed for him  :-\

John Zebedee was born in Damerham which is in Hampshire.  His mother born in Cranborne, Dorset. Both very close to each other.

I wonder where your aunt found the information that his father John was a dentist from Sussex  ???

This is the section of the baptismal record I was given decades ago.  Now that I relook at it, wondering if it's actually for my fella or not.  Ah, the joys of research, eh.

Can't find copy of Bastardy record, but note I have is "from National Archives Bastardy Order [no ref.] 06.08.1833"

Just posting info I can see for either of them in case anyone else is trying to help  :)

Mary Zebedee
Baptism date   16 April 1797
Cranborne, DORSET
Parents William & Rebecca

1841 has John living Cranborne, Dorset age 15 not born in County
HO107 /287 bk11 f10 p14
......

Could you please give the exact wording for the bastardy order and the baptism entry

Thanks, Rosie

Yes, will locate and let you know.  As for the 1841 Census; I recently say that one.  I was very interested this census because of who the neighbour was.  Rebecca Zebedee would have been John's grandmother

Father-in-law would be John Thomas' great grand son.  What everyone has been finding is certainly interesting (and makes more sense than what I was told).  When I approach the subject of the death/suicide I was told it was very hush hush.  Maybe some of the information he was told was to help avoid embarassment.  I will continue asking.

Zebedee_Canada - what is the line you are trying to trace. how is your father- in law related to John (William) Thomas?

Those names fit with what I was told.  Thanks for finding that, I will make the appropriate changes.

if this is your Francis marriage his father seems to be just John not John William. He does appear to have a brother John William born c1869

Marriage: 10 Sep 1896 St James, Accrington, Lancashire, England
Francis Patrick Thomas - 22, Labourer, Bachelor, 99 Richmond Hill
Emma Bleasdale - 21, Weaver, Spinster, 174 Richmond Hill
Groom's Father: John Thomas, Deceased, Brass Moulder
Bride's Father: Richard Remmington Bleasdale, Labourer
    Witness: Albert Brown; Annie Bleasdale
Married by Certificate by: John Procter Petty
Notes: [Groom signed as Francis Pathrick Thomas]

That one I can answer...Yes, she is and they are.

I can't find birth registrations for any of those children apart from the first one.

Is Margaret down as a widow in 1881 with the children?

Thanks for that.  Clearly I need to have a long chat with my father-in-law, eh?

Quote
John William, 1871 census shows age of 28, but believe this to be incorrect as the 1861 census shows age of 23.  Both census show his birth place as Liverpool

Bit of a mix up I think because Margaret Thomas (Godwin) in 1871 is with her mother
and son John A G

Margaret is down as wife of master mariner in China I think it says so a different family if you have your John William in this country in 1871 - is he with wife and 2 little children?
