Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: Wetheringsett Marriage 1800-1813 ish
« on: Monday 19 April 10 01:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi Spark :)

I've done the look-up for you, not a lot of joy though I'm afraid.

I checked the marriage records from 1797 - 1820 and couldn't find anything. The only Georges were Baker or Blomfield, not very much like Keely.
I checked the baptisms from 1801 - 1812 incase they had children there. Again the only George dads were Baker or Taylor.

I did find Mary though :-

Baptism dated June 18 1780 Mary, base child of Susan Mintor.

And that's it, the only Mintor I could find. I checked baptisms from 1779 - 1787 in case there were others but I couldn't find anything else.

If you want me to look anything else up please let me know by sending me a message. As you noticed I haven't been on for quite a while now. I stopped doing genealogy a couple of years ago as I became totally obsessed with it and got nothing else done! I intend to get back into it eventually but not until I have heaps of spare time! I am, however, more than willing to look up for others - that's the whole point of buying the records aye :)

Sorry I couldn't be of more help with this....good luck  :D

Hi Graham

I've looked through the records for you and unfortunately haven't been able to find any of the info you requested. There aren't a lot of either Allards/Allwoods or Potters in the records but I'll detail the ones I did find.

I checked Baptisms and Burials for the period 1730 - 1799 and Marriages for 1730 - 1774. I should point out that quite a lot of the entries up to about 1740 are nearly unreadable - only thing to do is look at the [very dim] scrawl and see if it looks anything like the name you're looking for!

Okay, Potters first as there were more of them. I don't think the John and Susan Potter will be your Mary's parents as they have a daughter called Mary in 1772 BUT John could maybe be her uncle?

1732  Alice, daughter of Philip and Ann Potter, bapt. Dec 3
1734  Priscilla, daughter of Philip and Ann Potter, bapt. Dec 11

1735  Priscilla, daughter of Philip and Ann Potter, buried in woolen Aug 31
1735  Alice, daughter of Philip and Ann Potter, buried in woolen Sept 7

1738  Richard, son of Philip and Ann Potter, bapt. Feb 22

1754  John Potter and Susan Martin, both single of this parish, married entry no. 2 Nov 17

1755  Susan, daughter of John and Susan Potter, bapt. Nov 23
1757  John, son of John and Susan Potter, bapt. Oct 2
1759  James, son of John and Susan Potter, bapt. Feb 5 or 8
1764  Thomas, son of John and Susan Potter, bapt. Apr 18
1765  Elizabeth, daughter of John and Susan Potter, bapt. July 21

1765  John, son of John and Dusan Potter, buried Sept 5
1767  Elizabeth Potter, an infant, buried Aug 2

1767  Elizabeth, daughter of John and Susan Potter, bapt. Dec 24

1769  Ann, wife of Philip Potter, buried Aug 4

1772  Mary, daughter of John and Susan Potter, bapt. Jun 14

1773  James Allwood and Mary Potter, both single of this parish, married entry no. 129 May 17

1775  Philip Potter, buried Jan 11
1777  Richard Potter, buried May 21
1788  John Potter, pauper, buried Jan 10

ALLWOODS

1773 John and James, twin sons of James and Mary Allwood, bapt. Dec 2nd

1773 John Allwood, buried Dec 17 (NB: doesn't say 'infant')

1775 Elizabeth, daughter of James and Mary Allwood, bapt. Apr 23
1777 John, son of James and Mary Allwood, bapt. Mar 23
1778 William, son of James and Mary Allwood, bapt. Sept 27
1780 Sarah, daughter of James and Mary Allwood, bapt. Nov 26
1782 Joseph, son of James and Mary Allwood, bapt. Dec 22
1786 Mary, daughter of James and Mary Allwood, pauper, bapt. Feb 12
1788 Edmund, son of James and Mary Allwood, pauper, bapt. Nov 2
1790 Jeremiah, son of James and Mary Allwood, pauper, bapt. Sept 3,5 or 8
1793 Henry, son of James and Mary Allwood, bapt. Feb 2

1799 Elizabeth, daughter of John and Susan Allwood, bapt. June 23

I assume you already have James and Mary's children but I've listed them anyway so you can check with what you may have.

Do a google search for the Suffolk Family History Society. Before I bought the records someone did a free search for me so I knew I was in the right area. It could be that your family were between 2 churches and someone at the site could give you a likely church (Brockford?) to check. Here's one link http://www.genealogy-links.co.uk/html/sfk.lookup.html

Sorry I couldn't find what you were actually looking for but if any of this ties up with your family and you need something else checking just ask :)

Cheers, Debbie

Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: Anybody know of Fellrigg or Port Cheer?
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 01:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi revmother

I did manage to find out about Fell Rigg. My greatgrandad was a coachman at Upper Monybuie House and we thought he and his family had lived above the stables. We were in the UK visiting family last year and managed to get up to Dumfries for a couple of days. The present owner of Monybuie House was very friendly and gave us what history he knew and showed us the stables, etc. However, on later talking to a new rellie we met while there, we discovered that the family lived a mile or so down the road in a cottage called Fell Rigg. Unfortunately all that remains are a few stones now but at least we know now! We also saw the 'schoolhouse' near the entrance to the estate which is now a residential house.

I wish we'd had longer than a couple of days though. Maybe when the kids leave home we can go back for longer and have a good look around!

Thanks for the link, I've bookmarked that for when I have some spare time  :)

Cheers, Deb

Here's a photo my daughter took in a churchyard in Dumfries while on holiday last year. Apparently quite a lot of the gravestones had these skulls on the back.

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Wetheringset cum Brockford - VICE
« on: Sunday 04 March 07 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi ffortune   :)

Sorry it's taken me so long to look these up for you. I'm decorating at the moment so didn't see your post until Rick pointed it out to me and then had to dig my fiche reader out from behind a load of other stuff we'd stored while decorating!  Anyway, got around to it today and I'm not sure if I can help you or not.

I didn't find any Vices 1636-1656 in births, marriages or deaths.  I did find some later and will list these for you but they may not be who you're after.

Baptisms - checked 1635-1670 then 1670-1705

1677 - Martha daughter of John & Jane Vice was baptized April 18th
1679 - Ann/Ame daughter of John & Jane Vice/Wise was baptized July 27th
1682 - Jane daughter of John & Jane Vice/Vicar was baptized June 15th
1684 - John son of John & Jane Vice was baptized Augist 23rd
1687 - Elizabeth daughter of John & Jane Vice was baptized May 17th
1688 - Margaret daughter of John & Jane Vice was baptized January 8th (actually 1689)
1691 - Edward son of John & Jane Vice was baptized July 12th
1696 - Grace daughter of JOhn & Jane Vice was baptized August 29th

NB: Where I've put Wise & Vicar writing was unclear BUT I came across no other entries for either Wise or Vicar so I think Vice is the most likely.

Marriages - checked 1630-1660 then 1660-1729

1663 - John Vice and Katharine Catchpoll were married 23rd June
1676 - John Vice and Jane Walker were married 15th October

no other Vices male or female and neither of the above was recorded as a widow.

Burials - 1635-1663 then 1663-1729

1663 - Elizabeth, wife of John Vise buried 3rd May
1682 - Ame, daughter of John Vice was buried in woollen according to ye act December 25th
1689 - Elizabeth, daughter of John Vice was buried in woollen August 12th
1694 - Edward, son of John Vice was buried in woollen December 10th
1700 - Margaret, daughter of Jn Vice was buried in woollen October 11th
1705 - John Vice was buried in woollen July 19th
1725 - Jane Vice, widow was buried in woollen February 3rd (actually 1726)

I'm not too sure what buried in woollen means - maybe no money for a casket if they had caskets then? I'm sure someone else on here will be able to let you know.

Hope that helps you and I'm sorry there was nothing for the years you asked for.

Cheers, Debbie

1846 Dorothy Weavers of Brockford, age 83, entry 594, buried Nov 6

I also looked for the births of Mary Goddard and Mary Sharman but didn't find anything. Very few of either surname. I did find one marriage for Robert Goddard and Mary Soams, both single of Wetheringsett, married Nov 21 1752.

If the Joseph and Mary are ancestors of yours it looks like Joseph married twice and the 2nd wife was also a Mary. I wouldn't like to say which is the mother of James though as Joseph remarried 6 months before the baptism and there seem to be a lot of late baptisms in the records. Quite a few are baptised at a couple of years old.  I'll leave that to you to work out though aye  :-\

Hope that's some help to you. The Weavers seem to be a bit hit and miss in Wetheringsett, long gaps with no mention of them at all so I can only assume they moved around a bit or were mainly in a neighbouring parish.

I've written down all the Weavers I found in the periods mentioned - no Hubert sorry.

Good luck with your search. If you need anything else, let me know.

Cheers, Debbie

Hi Mike

Me again!  I didn't notice any Thomas as I was looking for James (see your other thread).

There are quite a few Weavers in the records though so if you let me know what other details you've got for Weavers I'll go through and see what I can find for you.

Cheers, Debbie
