The Common Room / Re: What & where was 'Bower House Fold' Blackburn, 1861
« on: Sunday 25 July 21 20:57 BST (UK)  »
I looked at an old map but if you look at todays map, and if you look up bower st now, opposite is a primrose Close. On this land was Bower House Fold, it has a railway line behind it.  There was a lot of mills and factories around this area and would have been very built up with workers houses. A plot shows on the 1924 map that it had an area directly adjoining the railway track that had been left vacant, showing some platform or underground railway connections, this is now built on and is where Primrose Close has houses on it. My friend lives there. xx

World War One / Re: fought but not fallen

:D So, now I know his war record, he really did do a lot of fighting, for most of the war, probably was at Ypres, and Gallipoli , and I remembered something as soon as I saw the Gallipoli link from MaxD, ..my mum could always recite the Maori 'oka' ( I don't know how you say or spell it), and she said her father learned it from a New Zealand soldier when he was in the army. He obviously told his little daughter, she has learned it off by heart and used to recite it to us. So there is truth in his being with a New Zealand soldier in Gallipoli, and he was in Egypt, and Ypres. His medical A1 release, doesn't surprise me, as he was a very strong guy my mum said he was a tall strapping handsome man, he would have made out he was better than he was. He developed very bad chest problems and couldn't work after. But all those years of fighting and war, away from family and home, how they stood it I will never know. Before I found out all this, the first world war always touched me deeply, even though all wars are terrible, that one struck at my heart. Maybe my grandfathers experience was with me.  And now, thanks to you lot on here, I have a new 'skeleton in the cupboard' legacy from him...the illegitimate child!  Cant wait to find out. Thank you again, you have encouraged me to learn more about researching, and not give up (I am rubbish on the computer). love and peace people xxx

:) :) Thank you soooooo much all of you. How wonderful. Firstly, you found him, but you may also have found my uncle Bill, his son. The William Albert Bibby, was from Rishton as you found, and the bronchitis could have been from his days in the pit, but mum was adamant it was the war. He had a son William Albert Bibby who was in Egypt also and the story I have been given is that he was a seargent major, and that he was at one time in the military police and he was in charge of Nazi officers prisoner of war camps in 2nd world war. But back to my grandfather from Rishton, I am delighted that you have given me these informations, he was married to Elizabeth driver and so I know that that one is correct...but, you have mentioned an illegitimate child and I am so fascinated and happy to know more with that one please if you have it. I am new to this so don't know how to reply to each one of you, so I am posting this in the hope that the person who found the info on the William Albert Bibby from Rishton, and the illegitimate story please will you get in touch. Lastly..do any of you wonderful people have any photos of him in any of your researches. Thank you xxx

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Emma Jemima Ravenscroft
« on: Monday 13 November 17 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi and thanks all for your posts. I have Emma's family tree e.g. born in india as was mum and dad. mum of portugese descent. I have details of both marriages. The first was classed as a Rev. Devereaux, but wealthy kids of titles used to buy these positions, no evidence of him ever being one. He inherited the title Viscount two yrs after marrying Emma Jemima Ravenscroft, in 1843 but there is another twist....in one of the Peerage websites it says THEIR son, another Robert, became the 16th viscount in 1843!  When in fact the Rev Robert Devereaux inherited in 1843 and was then known as the 15th Viscount Hereford. So a bit of a mystery there already. But its Emma I am interested in. I know her birth, death and her family tree, but nothing about her life, and there should be as she married two very influential and wealthy men. Yes, I have thought myself was she dark skinned, I wouldnt have thought so, her father was George Ravenscroft esq: merchant of East India company in Fort William, India which was a very big wig area populated by British hoy paloy and soldiers. Her mother obviously by her name catholic background, and the men may have had indian women but the women rarely did. But I still can get no pics of her anywhere. The seat of the 15th Viscount who she married, was in Tregoyd, wales, borders of Hereford and Wales. I have tried various sites linked with it but found nothing. I am a beginner really and I am sure I am missing something , some link. If anyone can help, much appreciate it. Thanks everyone xx

:'( My grandfather was gassed at Ypres, he survived. My mother said her mother told her, he went away a strapping young handsome man, and came home a gasping old man, he never worked again!  They struggled in poverty for most of their lives. I have tried to find him in all sorts of sites and links but I am not very good at this and I am all over the place going round in circles. He was from Blackburn Lancashire, he may have been in the Lancashire Fusiliers and his name was William Albert Bibby...or just William, or just Albert. My mother has dementia now and doesn't remember things fully.  Could anyone help please?

Family History Beginners Board / Emma Jemima Ravenscroft
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
???  Hi everyone. I am researchin emma jemima Ravenscroft born 1810/7 in Fort William, India. This lady went on to marry in Britain,inNovember 1851, Rev.Robert Devereaux who on the death of his father became 15th Viscount Hereford, and she became Viscountess Hereford. The mystery is....there are details for all the viscountess' up to her, and although she is recorded as having married him, there are no portraits or pictures or photos of her at all!! This is unusual, as all titled people have their portraits done in their regalia and pictures/photos when possible.  Yet there are NONE of Emma Jemima Ravenscroft.   When he died, she went on to marry John Ireland Blackburne in 1857 who was also a wealthy person and an influential politician for most of his life, born into money and inheriting wealth and large stately type houses, yet again...no pictures of her here either but many of him.   What was it about Emma Jemima that protocol and society did not like? Was she rubbed out of history of the titled society, and the political society? And why? If anyone can shed any light on where I can find a picture of this lady I will be extremely grateful as I have been searching for months and am going around in circles. Done the peerage sites, etc and her family tree shows no photos either. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!! Beginner wilting here. xxxx
