The Common Room / Re: Address search ?

. .
Even numbers always on right hand side of streets

Not always.
KEW DRIVE, WIGSTON, Leicestershire has EVEN numbers on the left.
The two semi-detached houses at the top of the cul-de-sac are 31 & 14, number 31 is on the right and 14 is on the left as you face them.
A former resident.

Yes, but surely that means if you were calculating back from now to a date in 1702, the days of the week would be offset by 3 days?

A decent date calculator should take note of Julian/Gregorian calendars changes.
The change was not universal worldwide, England was several years behind many continental countries, so a calculator would also need to include several change dates depending on country, a nightmare to programme.

The Calendar (New Style) Act 1750 did not make any changes to the days of the week.
Wednesday, 2 September 1752, was followed by Thursday, 14 September 1752.
But the 14th would have been a Monday before the change!

The Lighter Side / Re: A Coincidence

There`s always a surprise to be had in genealogy !!
. . .
On the 1891 census James` sister Rachel lived with her husband at 10 Ladylaw Place, Hawick. I thought it seemed familiar, so on with the thinking cap!

In 1905 Agnes` sister Mary married William Scott - their address was 10 Ladylaw Place.

24 years between the 2 events, but Mary and Rachel had only 1 year in age separating them !
. . .

Check your maths.
1905-1891 = 14 not 24.
Although that is still a little strange, maybe Mary just couldn't find the right man.

Hi MerriMum,
Glad to have helped.
I had the same problem, it took me a little while to twig it too, even though I started with the original maiden name entry and an exact birth date from the baptism register.
If you haven't already done it, it would be helpful to future researchers to add two Postems to the FreeBMD Indexes cross-referencing the original maiden name entry and the later married name re-registration.
Regards,
Malcolm.

"Aircrew Remembered" has the following entry for him:-
Eastoe, Eric Richard
Scroll to bottom of page, at the far right of the entry is a link to the accident report on the training flight round the Isle of Man.
His name is still redacted because his death was recorded in the Isle of Man not in England. They have a separate system.
Search for certificate reference:- IoM BMD
Order Here

EDIT: Unfortunately the BMD reference appears to be incomplete which may make obtaining a certificate somewhat expensive, the Registry make a charge of £27 for searches (upto 5yrs) of records before 1980.

Small world:- That was my mother's 14th birthday.

Another possibility is the re-registration of an illegitimate child upon the parents marriage in '71 with a hand written addendum in the '70 index.
There would therefore be a third registration in the mother's maiden name in the '70 index.

Have to agree it is Wicks. Compare the initial and final letters of widdow immediately above.

The Common Room / GRO & Royal Mail delivery back to normal?
« on: Wednesday 24 February 21 12:32 GMT (UK)  »
Ordered a physical DC on 17th, it arrived this morning (24th) before mid-day. 🎉
I don't think I've ever had one arrive this quickly before, even in 'normal times'. Kudos to GRO & Royal Mail. 🌷🌸🌹🌻🌼
