The Common Room / Re: Searching for William Wayman (Weyman)

An update on my search for William Wayman (Weyman).
William Weyman is recorded on HMS Cornwallis in 1810. His naval will at the time mentions his wife, Ann, residing in Greenock so likely to be the correct couple. The Cornwallis changed its name to Akbar in 1811 and returned to Woolwich in 1812/13, so John Wayman's birth in Jan 1814 in Greenwich seems plausible.
William and Ann are recorded in Greenock in the 1841 census, William aged 76, occupation Merchant Seaman, and Ann 69.
This raises the question as to why he joined the Navy when he was around 45, was he 'pressed' or did he volunteer. Was the merchant trade so badly affected by the Napolionic wars?
When they married in 1797 he is referred to as a Merchant Seaman so presumably was operating out of Greenock.
Does anyone have experience in tracking down Merchant seaman on muster records, the National Archives collection is sparse around this date?
I have  so far failed to locate a plausible birth for William around 1765, the census only gives the location as England.

Annette, That's great many thanks. I had been looking on ScotlandsPeople for the 1841 details with no success but have now found it - even the phonetic name option failed to pick up Wllm Weyman!
Very many thanks

Thanks for the rapid response Pauline.
John shows in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census as an upholsterer working in Glasgow. The 1881 census gives his birthplace as Greenwich, the other census gives it as England. He married Jane McLauchlan in London in 1836 and their early family were born in London including my great great grandmother Jane. They moved to Scotland sometime between 1842 and 1846. No idea why he and Jane were in London, she was born in Argyllshire.
John's death certificate gives his parents details so most probably I have the birth of Ann Craig wrong.

John Wayman was born in Greenwich in 1814, parents given on his death certificate in 1881 as William Wayman, a signalman in the Royal Navy and Ann Craig. Ann, I believe was born in 1765 in Neilston, Renfrew. William and Ann were married in Greenock in 1797 with their early family, William (1800) and Mary (!804) born in Greenock. A later sibling Robert was also born back in Greenock, making it seem likely that William (father) was in the Navy for a time. Family notes recall William as operating a sloop carrying provisions in the Firth of Forth area, so again a sea faring link. A William Weyman is listed on the forces records website as serving on the HMS Cornwallis in 1810, however the Cornwallis served in the Far East and only returned to the UK in 1814. This casts doubt on the John birth date of Feb 1814.

Question, does anyone else have any connections to this family? I have been unable to find a likely birth for William the older in either the IGI files or the Scottish records.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Re: Robert Wayman & Janet Thomson 1846/1847

Hi Norrie,
Robert Wayman, son of William Wayman and Ann Craig, was the brother of my great great grandfather, John Wayman. My family notes say that Robert was a painter in Barbados married to Janet Thomson so clearly the same one!
I don't know any more aboit Robert but am currently researching Willaim Wayman's background. he was a signalman in the Royal Navy and I believe served on the Cornwallis in 1810 but no more info at present.
