FH Documents and Artefacts / Original Military documents from WWII
« on: Monday 01 May 23 23:18 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know whether original WWII soldier's documents can be sent back to the Army.  About half of WWII military records were destroyed by fire in 1971 in St. Louis (including my father's).   I would love to find a repository for my father's original military documents.   Who does one contact?

United States of America / Re: Francis Piggott - James City Co, Virginia - parents?
« on: Tuesday 11 October 22 20:44 BST (UK)  »
I have one source I can check, but only if I get to the Library of Virginia in Richmond.  I have to re-up my library card in person since I am not a Virginia resident.  (They can do it online)

In their catalog, under Wills and Administrations, are 3 Piggott entries, one of which Pearson Piggott of James City County, and apparenlty is an abstract of a will.  It might list his wife and/or children.  This is listed as NOT being included in Torrance's book of Virginia Wills and Administrations (which I have yet to consult).

The other 2 are a John Piggot from Northampton Co (1702), and a John Piggott from Henrico Co (1787).

It is possible that the Northampton Co one is a ancestor of the James City Piggotts, given the date.  There seem to have been 2 cadres of Piggotts in Va, one in Loudoun Co and the other in James City Co, springing from the same progenitor in Northampton Co.

Thanks for helping.  The name is sufficiently uncommon that I was hoping to garner interest from other Piggott descendants.

I have tried Shipslist and found nothing.  I was hoping there might be records of ships leaving Liverpool such as harbormasters lists of some sort.

Thanks.

United States of America / Francis Piggott - James City Co, Virginia - parents?
« on: Sunday 09 October 22 00:11 BST (UK)  »
Looking for parents of FRANCIS PIGGOTT of James City Co., Virginia.
He was married about 1799 to Elizabeth Montague.

A progression of property taxes from 1782 - 1794 shows that Francis Piggott first appears in 1784 as 16-21.  [ I believe that property taxes were levied once a male reached 16 years of age.  By 1786 he is listed as over 21 [birth year 1765-1768]

In the succeeding property tax lists from 1784 - 1792, there are several Piggotts - John Sr, John Jr, Pearson, Archer, Francis, and a Rebecca Piggott (1784-1790).  I believe that she is a widow of one of these Piggotts - Otherwise women were not listed separately.  Rebecca disappears by 1790, suggesting that she had died.  If so, she could be of an age to be Francis' mother.  Francis died in 1833.

Hope that's not too confusing.  Trying to figure out which of these Piggotts is Francis' father and whether Rebecca is his mother.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Re: Alien entry books (1794-1921)

I presume that these Alien register books do NOT include Irish, because they were not "aliens"

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Emigrant ships from Liverpool (to Quebec) 1830s
« on: Saturday 08 October 22 23:15 BST (UK)  »
Are there any resources or data relating to ships that left or arrived at Liverpool headed for Canada in the 1830s?  I have Irish ancestors who traveled from Londonderry to Liverpool, where they had to wait 2 weeks for a ship heading for Canada.  I know the name of the ship, the Pleasant, a steerage vessel that took immigrants to Canada and then returned with lumber from Canada.

Fermanagh / Re: Jane Howden, likely from Inishmacsaint parish Fermanagh

Lisa.
One of your commenters is correct.  I have a list of baptisms from Inishmacsaint Parish which I think I found at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City (this was long ago, when I was not doing very well with sourcing, so my record is labeled FHC 0992663, whic might be a film or fiche number)

John Ovens was baptized 23 June 1811, parents William Ovens and Elizabeth Stinson of Corcloon (townland).  Two other children were listed as well:
     Alexr., baptized 11 September 1803
     Anne, baptized 3 March 1807

Inishmacsaint is full of Ovens.  Corcloon and Drumcrow seem popular.

The Ovens family is collateral to mine - Anne Ovens married a Howden, and I'm trying to find a marriage of Jane Howden to a Bustard (Devenish parish)

I am attaching the Ovens entries from the list.

Regards,
Jean Frane

Fermanagh / Re: Bustard family - Frevagh townland, Fermanagh

Elwyn,
Thanks you so much!  I have tried all the sources I could find, but obviously did not delve deep enough to find Elizabeth in my PRONI searches.

You obviously have a lot of Irish capabilities and know lots of sources.  I will try to find those birth, marriages and deaths at PRONI.  I had assumed there were none that early to be found.

Nex up, a thread about Jane Howden and her family and the relationship of this family with that of Gustavus Howden.Everyone except William Bustard ended up in Canada, mostly Quebec.

Fermanagh / Jane Howden, likely from Inishmacsaint parish Fermanagh
« on: Friday 07 October 22 01:39 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking the parents of a JANE HOWDEN (spelling varies), who married a JOHN BUSTARD of Frevagh townland in Fermanagh.  She and her husband emigrated to Canada with 4 children in 1838 or 1839 and settled in Quebec.  The marriage would have been before 1830, as their first child was born in 1830.

I believe the Howden family to have resided in Inishmacsaint parish, as I find other Howdens there.  John Bustard was from Devenish parish next door.

This John Bustard was a brother of William, James, Robert and Isabella Bustard.

Associated names are Fiddes, Hamilton, and possibly Fallis and Ovens.
