Hope this writeup helps.

I'm a direct descendent of John Hawkins Newman.  He is my 3x great grandfather.  The following I have been able to corroborate through primary evidence(pdfs of census and other records) and also from talking with my grandmother.

Born in Wiltshire England 12/10/1851. Exact place of birth is listed as Bradford on Avon in Birth/Christening Record, in 1861 Census it is listed as Freshford Somerset and in 1881 Census it is listed as Limpley Stoke.  All three locations are in the suburbs of Bath England in the same suburban geographic area and are neighboring towns and cities in England. John was baptized in Westwood, Wiltshire, England 03/14/1852. Parents were George Newman and Anne Charmbury. It appears that at some point after John’s birth and before 1861 Ann either died or left the family and George remarried a woman named Helen who appears listed as john’s mother in the 1861 Census. John married Emily Salmon in 1872. In 1875 they were living in Montreal Canada where there son George was born. In 1877 they were living in Yarmouth, MA where their son Richard was born.  After his birth the family moved back to England as they appear in the 1881 England Census living in Charlcombe, Somerset, England. The family moved back to the US sometime after 1883 and appears in the 1900 Census living in Woburn, MA. In the 1881 England Census, John’s occupation is listed as a gardener at a Park. In the 1900, -1930 Census records his occupation is listed as a florist. In 1914, Emily died from cerebral hemorrhaging. John remarried in or around 1916.  His second wife, Anne was born in England. They did not have any children together. John became a Mason in 1911 and achieved the 32nd degree. John lived at 19 Willow Street in Woburn(now 74 Willow Street). John apparently did well financially but got sick toward the end of his life and spent most of the money on medical treatment. John died 10/10/1938. Children with his first wife Emily are as follows:

   John Hawkins Jr. b. 1873; m. Elsie Dobbins Feb 7, 1896
George H. b. circa 1875 in Montreal, Canada
