Scotland / Re: Presbyterian Ministers
« on: Tuesday 05 March 19 11:13 GMT (UK)  »

Do you know for certain that he was ordained in Scotland rather than in Ireland? I don't know anything about the Presbyterian churches in Ireland but in Scotland most of them seem to have published lists - often called "Fasti" - a bit of Latin meaning list.  At the time you mention, if he was in Scotland he might have been a minister of the Church of Scotland, of the Relief Church, of the Associate Presbyterian or possibly the Cameronians or Reformed Presbyterian Church. The information about the Relief Church and the Associate Presbyterian church is held in a large 2 volume set called The History of the United Presbyterian Church (these 2 churches came together to form the UP Church.

I know that published information about the ministers of these churches is available in the Edinburgh Central Library and I would normally offer to check for you but I am unlikely to be going there within the next few weeks.

Regards

Jessden

I know that this is a long time after the original post, but there is a resource for researching Scottish Presbyterian ministers that has recently become available.

There is a website ecclegen.com which gives information about Free Church ministers, 1843-1900, but which also contains an index with the names of Presbyterian ministers of all denominations – Church of Scotland, Seceders, Free Church, Reformed Presbyterian – with links to digital resouces containing basic biographical information. For example, the John Millar that these posts are all about is actually recorded as John Miller and there are 4 references to him in two different books. OK, these don’t add anything much to what is now known about him. The point I’m making is that such information is readily available now in the General Index of Scottish Presbyterian Ministers at http://ecclegen.com/general-index-general-index/

I thought this might be of interest to people interested in researching in Scottish ministers' lists.

Look here: http://ecclegen.com/general-index-r/#Ramage,%20William Scroll down and you will find Ramsay, James: 1693, Eyemouth, and various references where a little is said about his family and a bit more about his ministry.

Thomas was the Free Church of Scotland Minister in Coupar Angus in 1871, if that helps in any way.
I think they were quite 'well-connected' as they lived in the Free Church Manse in Coupar Angus for some years.

Any connections?

Thanks,

Lisa Hawkins.

I know this is belated but perhaps someone will find it useful.

There is a web-site which has a special interest in Free Church ministers. Look at http://ecclegen.com/ministers-b/#BAIN,%20THOMAS and follow the links there. He was well connected!

There is a web-site which has indexes of Scottish Presbyterian Ministers of various denominations and also of some of their congregations. Here is a link for Makerstoun Free Church: http://ecclegen.com/congregations-2/#_Hlk377368628

And here is one which provides a link to information on the Church of Scotland there: http://ecclegen.com/searching-by-congregations/#M.

One way to check would be to look up Old Monkland in 'Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae'. This will tell you the names of the ministers of every parish, and the dates of their incumbency. So if you find from the 'Fasti' that Rev John Johnston was the incumbent on the relevant date, that would answer your question. The 'Fasti' are available to consult online; Google is your friend.

All ministers in the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae are included in the Index of Scottish Presbyterian Ministers, as are the ministers of other Scottish Presbyterian Denominations. You can go here:
http://ecclegen.com/general-index-j/#Johnston,%20James

You will then have to scroll down to Johnson, John: 1842 Monkland and a click will take you to his Fasti entry.

His dad was Andrew Neil Sutherland - Free Church minister who married a Christina Purves on 27 March 1883 at Maxweltown and that is as far as I can go without Free Church records.

If you are interested in going back from Andrew Neil Sutherland, there is a web-site which specialises in Free Church ministers and although it doesn't have much in this case, you might be interested in looking at it: http://ecclegen.com/ministers-s/#SUTHERLAND%20ANDREW%20NEIL
