The Hercules transported emigrants from Harris, North Uist and Skye to Adelaide, South Australia and Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Highland and Islands Emigration Society in 1852-53. We have good passenger lists and information about passengers who were transferred to other ships as a result of a severe disease outbreak aboard the Hercules. However we are lacking records of the crew of the Hercules, apart from Captain Baynton and the surgeon. Does anyone know whether it is possible to find out names of the crew? Unlike most emigrant ships, the Hercules was a navy ship, so records may exist.

The Northern Territory was effectively part of South Australia from 1863 to 1911. The police force covered both, and was run from Adelaide, the capital of SA. The Northern Territory is due north of SA, and covers land from the SA/NT border at 26 degrees south all the way to the northern coast of Australia. South Australia goes from the border to the southern coast of Australia. My relative started his service in Adelaide and was transferred to Alice Springs in the NT in 1874.

Attached is a photo of my first cousin 3 times removed, Charles Edward Brookes, who was appointed a Mounted Constable in the Northern Territory Police force in 1874. I am interested in the uniform he is wearing. Can anyone tell me anything about this uniform? Is it a dress uniform? Was the sword part of the uniform or just for show? If the latter, would it have been provided by the police or is it more likely to have belonged to the man himself? Any information that could be gleaned from this photo would be greatly appreciated, no matter how small. Thank you.

I would like to know if there is enough information in this picture (I'm not sure if it is a portrait or a photograph) to give it an approximate date. The alternatives are a man born in 1789 d. 1853 or his son, born 1836 d. 1903.
