How do you know he was underage at enlistment?  is this based on the fact that there are no records for him for 1838?

James' baptism 18 Oct 1868 at Curragh Camp - sadly no name for mother!! Sponsors James Lappin & Ellen Egan.  Could James be a brother to Thomas snr?
Yes this is a strong possibility and another lead to follow  :)

https://registers.nli.ie/registers has the baptism 24 Fen 1839 at St Patrick's Belfast, mother Alice Mandile.

Also one 16 Mar 1834 son of Peter & Catherine.

Do you know when he died? Do you have him on any censuses?

Sadly. marriages on novascotiagenealogy.com start in 1864!! Would have stated both parties parents.
