EXECUTION OF A WOMAN AT TAUNTON. Catherine Churchill, a middle-aged woman, convicted at the recent Somerset Assizes for the wilful murder of her husband at Knowle, near Chard, on March 4th, was executed at Taunton on Monday, in the presence of the sheriff and the prison officials. Churchill's victim was a very aged and infirm man, to whom she had shown great brutality long before she murdered him. Marwood was the executioner. No reporters were admitted, and informatiion as to the occurrence was refused. A large crowd assembled, outside the prison, and punctually at eight o'clock the black flag was hoisted.

I copied the CWGC message onto the Kent & Sussex board as I recalled Kyn posting about him. CWGC are aware of her being a relation as she has been trying for some 2 years to get a memorial/gravestone for him as currently he is only on the Queenborough War Memorial. Looks like she has finally succeeded and is going to jog the CWGC memory that they have a relation already. Thanks to Sandra for posting the request

The Canadian Army had an historical branch at Fort Shiloh, they sent me loads of information on units that were around Newhaven. I've had a quick look but can't see any links but it might be worth you spending some time checking War Diaries
