Family History Beginners Board / Re: Jeffery family, gardiners from Kent

Thank you both for your posts. I corresponded with a many times removed cousin who believed that Elizabeth Stone(s) was a contraction for Girdlestone/Gardelstone and was a niece of the vicar who christened Richard Markwick Jeffery in 1818. I too have noted the change in middle name and birth of daughter Abigail. The birthdate for Elizabeth on the gravestone of her son Richard Gardlestone Jeffery is 1779, but I can find nothing of that date in Norfolk - Girdlestone, and again, nothing provable in Sussex/Kent for Stone(s)
There was a Markwick family in East Grinstead at the time Richard & Elizabeth were there.
Mary Child and John Webb were the witnesses to Richard & Elizabeth's marriage.
John Jeffery married Elizabeth Child in 1809 Lamberhurst, Kent - eldest son of Richard J. & Abigail Buss. Brother to Richard Chisman Jefffery who married our Elizabeth Stone(s). I have not been able to trace this Elizabeth Child or link her to Mary Child, the witness.
I am a direct descendant of Richard & Elizabeth and would be delighted to share any information I have about the Jeffery family. They are easy to trace from the time they purchased land in 1825 but to date have not been able to place them in Canada earlier (other than the school reunion paper of 1942).
Any insights you might have to help me find Elizabeth Stone(s) would be appreciated. I will pursue Steed Girdlestone - I too am intrigued that they were so far from home.
I am also interested in the fact that Richard Jeffery II moved around so much at a time when travel was unusual. In 1811 he is in London, in 1813, East Grinstead, in 1814 his son is christened in Lamberhurst and in 1816 he is in Upper Sheringham.

Thank you for your help, I didn't want to be boring.
This Richard (II) Jeffery was born in Lamberhurst, Kent in 1784 to Richard (I) and Abigail (Buss). According to a family history written as part of a pioneer school centennial in 1942, Richard (II) and his father (also Richard) came to Canada with Prince Edward Augustus in 1791, returned to Kent in 1799. While in Canada he designed gardens in Halifax, Nova Scotia and possibly Montmorency House, Quebec. Again according to family papers (not documented) Richard II son, came to Canada with his family (Wife, Elizabeth Stone, and sons John, 1813, Alfred, 1814 and Richard III 1818) along with the household of Sir Peregrine Maitland when he came as Lt. Gov. of Upper Canada in August 1818. Richard II is said to have created the rose gardens for him at his country house near Niagara Falls (Stamford).

Richard II bought land in Vaughan Township, Ontario, just north of Toronto, in 1825 and that is easily documented. I am trying to find out who Elizabeth was - possibly related to the Girdlestones of Norfolk as the youngest son was baptized in Upper Sheringham, Norfolk by the vicar, John Girdlestone. Family legend has it that she was a titled lady, but I've found nothing to support that.

Richard II's son John was baptized in East Grinstead, Alfred in Lamberhurst and Richard in Upper Sheringham.

Richard I, father, and Abigail Buss were married in Lamberhurst in 1781. I think he as born in Wadhurst in 1755. I have no record of Abigail's birth yet. If my search is correct, this Richard's father was John and his mother Anne Cheesman. Death records note this John and I think one of his sons as being gardiners. It gets very confusing with so many Johns and Richards.

Family History Beginners Board / Jeffery family, gardiners from Kent

I am looking for information about the Jeffery family - lots of Richards and Johns - many of whom were gardiners in Kent and E Sussex (Lamberhurst, Wadhurst, etc). I am particularly interested in the Richard Jeffery who came to Canada in 1825 or before. It is said that he was with the household of Sir Peregrine Maitland when he came to Canada as Lieutenant Governor in 1818. That's what I am trying to prove - or not.

Also helpful would be information about where they worked as gardiners.
There may be a connection to Norfolk and the Girdlestone family
This is a new format for me, so I very much appreciate any help you can give.
