The Common Room / Re: Apprenticed after father's death?
« on: Friday 10 September 21 19:50 BST (UK)  »
It is not uncommon for the apprentice's father to be deceased when he begins the apprenticeship.
Among my own ancestors, there are at least four young teenagers/boys who began their apprenticeship after the death of their father.  In one case the mother was the sponsor.

Since there would potentially be a freedom of the city available to Benjamin if he completed the full term, it might be worth looking at the Freedom of the City Admission Papers London (which can be accessed on Ancestry perhaps at your local library) to see if Benjamin is listed.  I was led there by a random entry in a county database and I found two indentures which were helpful in explaining where these country boys had ended up!

If we are notified that a RootsChatter has passed away, their profile is edited to show

Deceased Rest In Peace

But as Girl Guide says, we are not always informed if friends or family are not aware that someone was a member.

Some people join and only use the chatroom.  Others join but make no postings - quite a few of those.  But their names remain on the list of members.

You can always check to see when someone last logged in by viewing their profile.  I just picked one at random who joined in 2004 but had made no postings.  They last logged in in 2006.

But there are plenty of us still around who joined a long time ago and still going strong.  ;D

Some films are never viewable from home and have to be viewed at an affiliate library or FH centre - no way round that.

For the 17th century wills there does seem to be a filing system according to the deanery in which the particular parish was situated.  So Horsham is in the deanery of Storrington.  I located the start of that run of wills for the correct year and then looked through the wills to find the Briggs ones.  I was not so lucky with the 16th century - there seems to be less order to them and they are more difficult to read in places.

Sometimes it does have to be the old-fashioned way: look at every page until you find the right one. Eye-straining though.  :(

Ann's should be there somewhere (reference is STC I /14/15b) but I haven't found it on any of the films so far.  The early wills are quite difficult to make out and there is some damage to many.

Thomas Barker is not in that index.  Was it proved in Chichester?

Time to move on, I think.

Courtesy, good manners and tolerance - please, everyone try to remember that, however hard it may be at times.

It sometimes happens if the executor takes their time or sees little point in carrying out the process - or worse dies before applying for probate.

I see that Mary was buried on 11 April 1705 - she must have  been persuaded to do something just before her own demise.  :-\

Found William's:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-D419-8VT?i=708&cc=1465706&cat=1022203

It does not seem to have been proved until 5 April 1705 although it is included under the 1704 file on that FS film.  That's why it can be so confusing.

I'd not taken in the information on the Samuel/Samawell baptism -  :-[
