The Common Room / Re: Why so much Scottish DNA?
« on: Tuesday 09 April 24 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for all the contributions.
My dads 3xgreat grandmother was Jane Orm(i)ston, born 4th Nov 1798 Beadnell,Northumberland. Its back through her lines that ive found Scottish ancestry. She married John Tilly on 1st August 1820 Boughton under Blean.Ive no idea what brought her South. She died in the same area where she married.
My dads paternal line(my grandad),his paternal ancestors, according to my research, were Huguenots who worked in the Faversham Gunpowder Industry. They married into local East Kent families of many generations standing.Grandads maternal line was also very old Kent families, brickfield workers and farm labourers.
My dads mums lines(my nan),her paternal side Surrey/Sussex,then rural Somerset to long before 1800.Her maternal line, all rural Kent and Sussex, going way back.
This is why i cant understand 29% Scottish, unless my research is wrong. There do seem to be quite a lot of DNA matches who only go back to Scotland.

The Common Room / Why so much Scottish DNA?
« on: Saturday 06 April 24 15:29 BST (UK)  »
My dads DNA has come back as 29% Scottish, but the only line i can find that goes North of the Border is a single 7xgreat grandfather born in Kelso in 1659.Would that be enough to provide that level of Scottish DNA,or is it likely ive got something wrong,or things are not as they seem from the records.
Any thoughts appreciated.

TIA.

Kent / Re: James Jacob marriage.

Thanks for the response.I think its a bit late and too far.My family is mostly spread between Faversham and Dover.Im really struggling to confirm anything back beyond my 4xgreat grandparents James Jacob and Mary Ann Smith.Ive got DNA confirmation for Mary Ann.I think my James is the one baptised in Faversham 28th Feb 1802 to James and Mary, but ive got no Rickard DNA,so im a bit uneasy about it.

Kent / James Jacob marriage.
« on: Monday 04 March 24 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone find an alternative marriage for James Jacob, other than the one to Mary Richard(Rickard),on 8th May 1791 Faversham.Ive been unable to find any DNA matches on MyHeritage or Ancestry to anyone in Mary Rickards family, and nothing on thrulines.Would that be likely for a 5xgreat grandmother? If anyone can find any other possibilities,id be grateful.

Thanks.

Just a bit more,in addition to the last posting.

Mathew Jacob married Avis Tennacker on 1st Dec 1561 Boughton under Blean. They had several children baptised there, including an Avis.Theres also Cciriack bapt 8th Sept 1562,but no mother shown.I reckon hes probably a sibling of the others.

Ive been having a look at the alternative Miles Jacob today, but still cant get very far.
There is a marriage for a Richard Jacob to a Julian Court, which is a bit like Judith, but thats all i can find. Its on Sept 27th 1683 in Doddington, near Faversham. Its after the 1671 birth of Miles. There is one son born to Richard and Julian,Amos, born in Doddington in 1685.Not really sure about that.
Theres quite a few baptisms for Richard Jacob in Kent that would fit,so its hard to know if any are him.Ive heard it suggested that my Jacobs might have been Hugenots, working in the Faversham Gunpowder industry, and seem to have travelled frequently between Faversham and Folkstone, sometimes baptising the same child in both towns,so that doesnt help.
My more recent ones do have strong links to Boughton under Blean, and ive found some other Jacobs further back in that area:

Avis bapt 11th Aug 1594.

Cirriack bapt 28th Nov 1595.

Margaret bapt 16th Oct 1597.

Edward bapt 7th Sept 1600.

Marie bapt 25th Sept 1603.

All to Cerriack.Whats intrigued me is my dad has a living cousin in Faversham, where he was born and bred, and still lives, called Avis.Ive always thought its an unusual name,so that could be significant.

If anyone can help me make sense of any of this,or link me to Cerriack,id be really grateful.

The Common Room / Re: Mothers maiden name as surname.

Thanks for the replies.
I just wondered if there were any particular social groups who might have done this, maybe to show links between certain families.

The Common Room / Mothers maiden name as surname.
« on: Sunday 28 January 24 13:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

Ive noticed that my 5xgreat grandfather Twyman Lawson was given his mothers maiden name as a first name, his parents being Edward Lawson and Ann Twyman.
Also, further back,Anns father was Hammond Twyman, the son of Henry Twyman and Ann Hammond.
I was just wondering if theres any significance in this practice of using a mothers maiden name as a first name.

Kent / Re: Family of Richard Turner

I still cant find the baptism of Richard,to Thomas and Deborah.Ive managed to find Alice,Sarah,Catherine,Thomas and Ann,between 1703 and 1714,but cant see Richard.
Ive also found Thomas marriage to Deborah Foster in Canterbury in 1703.
Its difficult to know if this could be Richards family.Canterbury is very near to Whitstable, but i can find no evidence linking any of these to it.I cant find a likely death entry for Thomas or Deborah,so i dont know where they ended up.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.
